Background: Overall, stoma-related morbidity affects a reported 20-38% of pediatric patients. However, determining the true incidence of major stoma-related morbidity is challenging due to limited cohort sizes in existing studies. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate colostomy related morbidity among children both after stoma formation and stoma closure.

Methodology: In this single-centre, retrospective study, we assessed nutritional biomarkers (hemoglobin, ferritin, iron profile, Vitamin B12, Vitamin D, and calcium), glucose homeostasis indicators (C-peptide, HbA1C, and random blood glucose), blood lipids (triglycerides and cholesterol components), hormones involved in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (cortisol and adrenocorticotropic hormone), and thyroid hormones (T3, T4, thyroid-stimulating hormone, and parathyroid hormone) preoperatively and 12-month after SG in children aged 5-15 years.
Results: This study included 64 adolescents (mean age = 11.
Background And Importance: Split notochord syndrome (SNS) is an exceedingly rare type of spinal dysraphism. SNS is sometimes associated with other congenital dysraphic defects but, as in our case, the association with spinal cord lipoma, tethered cord, and spinal deformity in the form of spinal column duplication would be exceedingly rare. Herein, the authors report a three-year-old child presented with SNS associated with complex spinal deformity and other associated congenital anomalies.

Unfortunately, such a condition does not spare children from also developing morbid obesity, where incidence rates of childhood obesity-coupled with type 2 diabetes-are markedly elevated. Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) is gradually becoming the novel benchmark in bariatric surgery for the treatment of morbid obesity and associated co-morbidities, also within pediatric cases.
