Purpose: In this study, we aimed to develop an application that computes dose values resembling diagnostic reference level (DRL) conditions when disparity prevents direct dose comparisons between the national diagnostic reference levels in Japan 2020 (Japan DRLs_2020) and facility-specific computed tomography (CT) protocols.

Methods: We developed an application using the R programming language and RStudio software that computes dose values and median values based on Japan DRLs_2020 imaging conditions following extraction of necessary information for dose calculations from the Radiation Dose Structured Report (RDSR) and Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) tags. To ensure a user-friendly experience, we used the Shiny package to develop a graphical user interface that enables the application to operate seamlessly in web browsers.

Background: α-Tocopherol (αT) deficiency causes several neurologic disorders, such as spinocerebellar ataxia, peripheral neuropathy, and myopathy. Furthermore, decreased antibody production, impaired ex vivo T cell function, and elevated cytokine production are observed in humans and mice with αT deficiency. Although modeling αT deficiency in animals is challenging, αT depletion can be more readily achieved in α-tocopherol transfer protein-null (Ttpa) mice than wild-type (WT) mice.

The Perpendicular Period and Phase Scanning (PS) method can evaluate the uniformity of a laser-induced periodic surface structure (LIPSS). PS assesses the uniformity of LIPSS using the standard deviation of the peak period and the average of the phase difference in the direction perpendicular to LIPSS. The PS method demonstrates that LIPSS formed by two-color double-pulse irradiation is reduced to a quarter of the period dispersion, and the average phase difference of LIPSS is also reduced compared to the single-pulse irradiation.

To honor the contributions of Professor Hiroshi Maeda to the progress of targeted drug delivery research, a brief review of enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect theory proposed by him as the physiology-based principal mechanism of intra-tumoral accumulation of large molecules and small particles is presented. Under historical and practical backgrounds in developments of various drug delivery systems including macromolecular conjugates, the concept of EPR effect was advocated in mid1980s and has cultivated new cancer chemotherapeutic modalities until recently.
