A Comprehensive Skin Gas Analysis of Substances Related to Uraemia in Patients With End-Stage Kidney Disease: A Pilot Study.

Recent progress in gas-sensing technology has enabled the rapid collection and highly sensitive analysis of skin gases associated with body odour. Skin gases can be collected less invasively, more continuously, and less consciously than blood or urine. Patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) have a characteristic uremic odour that fades after initiating kidney replacement therapy.

Adenoid glioblastoma: Stromal hypovascularity and secretion of chondromodulin-I by tumor cells.

The case of a 75-year-old man with a glioblastoma of the right frontal lobe showing features of adenoid glioblastoma is reported. The tumor consisted of two components: the adenoid component, in which large, cohesive, polygonal cells with vesicular nuclei and abundant basophilic cytoplasm showed nest-like, trabecular, or tubular growth on the myxoid matrix and formed a multinodular configuration; and the subsidiary component, in which short spindle cells showed compact fascicular growth. The features of ordinary glioblastoma were also found in a small area.

H3 K27-altered diffuse midline glioma of the thalamus with formation of glio-fibrillary globular structures.

A case of diffuse midline glioma (DMG), H3 K27-altered, that arose in the right thalamus of a 14-year-old boy is reported. The patient died of tumor spread after a progressive clinical course of approximately 13 months. Histopathologically, the tumor consisted of a mixture of loose proliferation of stellate cells and compact fascicular growth of spindle cells showing a "piloid" feature.

Preoperative difficulty factors in delayed laparoscopic cholecystectomy: Tokyo Guidelines 2018 surgical difficulty score analysis.

Introduction: Tokyo Guidelines 2018 (TG18) recommend early laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) for low-risk acute cholecystitis (AC); however, some patients undergo delayed LC (DLC) after conservative treatment. DLC, influenced by chronic inflammation, is a difficult procedure. Previous studies on LC difficulty lacked objective measures.

Giant cell glioblastoma with lipogenic differentiation in a patient with neurofibromatosis type 1: A case report.

A 45-year-old woman with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) developed a tumor in the left frontal lobe that showed features of giant cell glioblastoma (GC-GB). In addition to the typical GC-GB features, the tumor showed lipogenic differentiation, with many atypical lipoblasts and mature adipocytes. Tumor cells, including the lipogenic cells, were immunoreactive for GFAP, S-100 protein, ATRX, and p53.

Beta-Hydroxyisovaleryl-Shikonin Eradicates Epithelial Cell Adhesion Molecule-Positive Liver Cancer Stem Cells by Suppressing dUTP Pyrophosphatase Expression.

Cancer stem cells (CSCs) play an essential role in tumorigenesis, chemoresistance, and metastasis. Previously, we demonstrated that the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is dictated by a subset of epithelial cell adhesion molecule-positive (EpCAM+) liver CSCs with the activation of Wnt signaling. In this study, we evaluated the expression of dUTP pyrophosphatase (dUTPase), which plays a central role in the development of chemoresistance to 5-fluorouracil, in EpCAM+ HCC cells.

5-Aminolevulinic acid fluorescence-guided endoscopic surgery for deep-seated intraparenchymal tumors.

Aim: The usefulness of 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA) fluorescence-assisted surgery for maximum resection of malignant gliomas has been established. However, its usefulness when combined with endoscopic surgery for deep-seated tumors has not been well established. In this study, whether 5-ALA photodynamic diagnosis (PDD) is feasible and useful for endoscopic surgery was investigated.

Evaluating the understandability and actionability of online educational videos on pre-dialysis chronic kidney disease.

Aim: It remains undetermined whether online education videos for Japanese patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are easy to understand and allow adoption of behavioural changes. This study quantitatively assessed the understandability and applicability of online education videos for patients with CKD.

Methods: In September 2021, we identified 200 videos on YouTube using the Japanese translations of the keywords 'kidney,' 'kidney disease,' 'CKD,' and 'chronic kidney disease.

Refractory Delayed Pneumocephalus after Transsphenoidal Cyst Drainage for Rathke's Cleft Cyst in a Patient with a Cerebrospinal Fluid Shunt.

A 75-year-old man presented with bilateral lower limb weakness to our hospital from another clinic. Radiological examinations implied the possibilities of idiopathic normal pressure hydrocephalus (iNPH) and a suprasellar cyst, but both were observed conservatively at that time. Due to the progressive gait disturbance, a lumboperitoneal shunt was implanted 1 year later.

A case of acute hydrocephalus due to a giant prolactinoma rescued by transventricular neuroendoscopic tumorectomy.

Background: A giant prolactinoma extending to the suprasellar area and causing hydrocephalus may be life-threatening and should be treated promptly. A case of a giant prolactinoma with acute hydrocephalus that underwent transventricular neuroendoscopic tumor resection followed by cabergoline administration is presented.

Case Description: A 21-year-old man had a headache lasting for about a month.

Paralytic Ileus during Treatment of Pulmonary and Renal Tuberculosis in a Non-Human Immunodeficiency Virus Patient: An Unusual Presentation of Tuberculosis-immune Reconstitution Inflammatory Syndrome.

Paralytic ileus as tuberculosis-immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (TB-IRIS) is extremely rare. We herein report a 44-year-old man with pulmonary and renal tuberculosis who developed paralytic ileus 14 days after starting antituberculosis therapy (ATT) despite an initial favorable response to ATT. Paralytic ileus was successfully managed with conservative care.

The effect of shunt removal on the quality of life in patients with congenital hydrocephalus.

Background: Although there have been reports investigating the quality of life of patients who underwent ventriculoperitoneal shunting or endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) for congenital hydrocephalus, there have been no studies of the quality of life of patients after ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) removal. In the present study, a survey of pediatric and congenital hydrocephalus patients was conducted to compare the quality of life of patients with a remaining VPS with that of patients who had the shunt removed.

Methods: Between February 2020 and November 2021, an outpatient survey was administered to patients 8 years of age and older who had undergone VPS due to a diagnosis of congenital hydrocephalus.

5-Aminolevulinic acid fluorescence-guided endoscopic surgery for intraventricular tumors.

Background: In recent years, the efficacy of 5-aminolevulinic acid photodynamic diagnosis (5-ALA PDD) has been reported for various types of brain tumors, including malignant glioma. In addition, many reports have been published on the usefulness of neuroendoscopic surgery for intraventricular lesions. However, no systematic report is available on the combined use of 5-ALA PDD and neuroendoscopy for various intraventricular tumors.

Primary central nervous system lymphoma of the tectal plate in adult.

Background: Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) originating in the brainstem is uncommon. In particular, PCNSL confined to the tectal plate in adults has never been reported in the past. The case of a 53-year-old man who was diagnosed with PCNSL in the tectal plate is reported.

Transoral removal of a hilo-parenchymal submandibular sialolith.

In sialolithiasis, the lithiasis is often large and located at the junction of the middle and posterior third of the duct, in the hilum region. In such cases, transoral approach for submandibular lithiases (TASL) is a useful treatment of choice in patients with large submandibular stones that can be palpated bimanually.

A case of proliferative glomerulonephritis with monoclonal IgG deposits (PGNMID) that responded favorably to steroid therapy.

Proliferative glomerulonephritis with monoclonal immunoglobulin deposits (PGNMID) generally has a poor prognosis and the consensus is that it needs to be treated with clone-directed therapy. However, the prognosis of PGNMID is heterogenous and some cases have been successfully treated using other therapeutic strategies. We herein report a case of PGNMID that responded favorably to steroids without clone-directed therapy.

A ventricular catheter that migrated into the fourth ventricle successfully removed using a neuroendoscope.

Background: In order to remove a foreign body in the ventricle, such as a ventricular drainage catheter, craniotomy and corticotomy are required to access the ventricle. A case in which a catheter in the 4th ventricle was safely removed with a flexible neuroendoscope is reported.

Case Description: A 47-year-old man underwent coil embolization and ventricular drainage for subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Stent-Assisted Coil Embolization of Ruptured Blood Blister-Like Aneurysm of the Basilar Artery: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Objective: Blood blister-like aneurysms (BBA) often develop on the anterior wall of the internal carotid artery, and few cases have been reported at other sites. We report a case of stent-assisted coil embolization in the acute phase for a ruptured BBA of the basilar artery.

Case Presentation: A 53-year-old woman underwent emergency stent-assisted coil embolization for subarachnoid hemorrhage due to a ruptured BBA in the main trunk of the basilar artery.

Rapid deterioration of an asymptomatic lumbosacral lipoma due to formation of an extracanalicular syrinx: case report.

The authors present the case of a 1-month-old girl with a lumbosacral lipoma who then developed an extracanalicular syrinx and experienced rapid deterioration. The patient's initial MRI study, obtained before she became symptomatic, revealed a spinal lipoma with a syrinx in contact with the lipoma-cord interface. She was initially asymptomatic but developed loss of motor function in the left leg 14 days after MRI.

Effect of adoptive T-cell immunotherapy on immunological parameters and prognosis in patients with advanced pancreatic cancer.

Background Aims: Immunotherapy is effective for many types of cancer, but its benefits in advanced pancreatic cancer, which has a poor prognosis, are not well established. In this study, the authors examined the effects of adoptive T-cell immunotherapy (ATI) on immune cell profiles and prognosis in patients with unresectable advanced pancreatic cancer.

Methods: Seventy-seven patients with unresectable advanced pancreatic cancer were treated with six cycles of αβ T cells alone or in combination with chemotherapy or chemoradiation.

Effects of adaptive immune cell therapy on the immune cell profile in patients with advanced gastric cancer.

Background: Immunotherapy for cancer patients has been the subject of attention in recent years. In this study, we investigated whether αβT-cell therapy causes changes in the host's immune cell profile, and if so, the effect of these changes on prognosis.

Methods: Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from 30 gastric cancer patients who had completed one course of αβT-cell therapy were analyzed.

Inactivation of Transcriptional Repressor Capicua Confers Sorafenib Resistance in Human Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

Background & Aims: Sorafenib is a multireceptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor that can prolong overall survival in patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Although most HCC patients who receive sorafenib ultimately show disease progression, it still is unclear whether and how HCC cells acquire chemoresistance during sorafenib treatment in human beings.

Methods: We analyzed surgically resected HCC tissues from a patient who received sorafenib for prevention of HCC recurrence after surgery (Adjuvant Sorafenib for Hepatocellular Carcinoma after Resection or Ablation trial) and established patient-derived HCC cells.

In September 2013, a 50-year-old woman presented to our hospital with right abdominal pain as the main complaint. Careful examinations led to the diagnosis of ascending colon cancer. In October 2013, resection of the right half colon and removal of the D3 lymph nodes were performed.
