Persistent colonization and outgrowth of potentially pathogenic organisms in the intestine can result from long-term antibiotic use or inflammatory conditions, and may perpetuate dysregulated immunity and tissue damage. Gram-negative Enterobacteriaceae gut pathobionts are particularly recalcitrant to conventional antibiotic treatment, although an emerging body of evidence suggests that manipulation of the commensal microbiota may be a practical alternative therapeutic strategy. View Article and Find Full Text PDFAim: The present study assessed low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels in school-aged children from the Ogasa District of Shizuoka Prefecture and evaluated the utility of non-invasive vascular tests, namely flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and intima-media thickness (IMT), in pediatric patients with familial hypercholesterolemia (FH).
Method: We analyzed the lipid test results of 8,568 students screened for prevention of lifestyle-related diseases and 78 children under 15 years old with cholesterol levels exceeding 220 mg/dL who visited Chutoen General Medical Center. We examined the LDL-C distribution from school-age screenings and conducted FMD and IMT assessments on those meeting the 2022 Pediatric FH Guidelines criteria.
Background: This study aimed to review the activities of the Kobe City Initial-phase Intensive Support Team for Dementia pre- and during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, to compare the characteristics of the target population and the performance of the team's activities, and determine the impact of the pandemic on the team's project.
Methods: The summary data obtained at the time of consultation, team activities, and participants' characteristics were extracted from 662 participants who started to receive support between April 2018 and March 2022. Statistical analysis was performed by dividing the participants into the following two groups: pre- and during COVID-19 pandemic groups.
Strokes cause spasticity via stretch reflex hyperexcitability in the spinal cord, and spastic paralysis due to involuntary muscle contraction in the hands and fingers can severely restrict skilled hand movements. However, the underlying neurological mechanisms remain unknown. Using a mouse model of spasticity after stroke, we demonstrate changes in neuronal activity with and without electrostimulation of the afferent nerve to induce the stretch reflex, measured using quantitative activation-induced manganese-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging.
