Rural general surgeon confidence with managing vascular emergencies: A national survey.

Objective(s): Life and limb threatening vascular emergencies often present to rural hospitals where only general surgery services are available. It is known that Australian rural general surgical centres encounter 10-20 emergency vascular surgery procedures annually. This study aimed to assess rural general surgeons' confidence managing emergent vascular procedures.

Diffuse large B cell lymphoma presenting as a peri-anal abscess.

A non-healing peri-anal abscess can be difficult to manage and is often attributed to chronic disease. This case documents a male in his seventh decade who presented with multiple peri-anal collections. The abscess cavity had caused necrosis of the internal sphincter muscles resulting in faecal incontinence.

Primary coronary artery bypass surgery in the presence of decreasing preoperative renal function: effect on short-term outcomes.

Background: This study evaluated the impact of decreasing renal function on short-term outcomes in patients undergoing primary coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).

Methods: The study period was from February 1999 to February 2009. Data on 4050 patients undergoing primary CABG were prospectively collected and analyzed retrospectively.

Cardiac surgery in the presence of dialysis: effect on mid-term outcomes and quality of life.

Background: this study evaluates the impact on short and mid-term outcomes and quality of life of dialysis dependent patients undergoing cardiac surgery. The benefit to patients from a bio-psycho-social perspective is put into context via an inter-personal patient interview.
