The present case-control study aimed to investigate the role of interaction of glutathione-s-transferase (GST) genotypes with environmental risk factors in determining susceptibility to head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) involving 1,250 cases and equal number of healthy controls. An increase in the risk of HNSCC and its subsites (larynx, pharynx, and oral cavity) was observed among the cases with null genotypes of GSTM1 (odds ratio [OR] = 1.87) or GSTT1 (OR = 1.

The electrical storm (ES) defined as ≥3 sustained episodes of ventricular tachycardia within a 24 h period comprises a wide spectrum of clinical entities. Mostly patients suffer from severe heart insufficiency and comorbidities making an immediate transfer into a heart center with multidisciplinary expertise in the treatment of ES mandatory. As these patients are often traumatized by ongoing tachycardia despite multiple cardioversions, early deep sedation and β‑blockade to break the vicious circle of sympathico-adrenergic hyperactivation is very effective.

More than 80% of the Earth surface is consisted of hostile and harsh environments, classified as extreme from an anthropogenic perspective. Microorganisms with acclimatized nature dominate these extreme ecosystems of the biosphere. Survivals in such environments initiate an inductive force leading to the production of noteworthy metabolites having peculiar biochemistry.

Article Synopsis
  • Diapause is a state that insects enter to survive unfavorable conditions, and studying its regulation is crucial for understanding ecological adaptation, particularly in the insect Chilo partellus.
  • The research involved crossing different strains of C. partellus, including hibernating and aestivating ones, to analyze traits like fecundity, survival rates, and diapause induction and termination.
  • Findings revealed that the aestivating strain enhanced overall reproductive success and survival, while not observing a significant diapause response in the nondiapause strain; also, genetic dominance played a key role in these traits based on the strains' diapause history.

[Acute bradycardia].

Herzschrittmacherther Elektrophysiol

March 2020

Clinical relevance of acute bradycardia is driven by symptoms and not primarily by the reported decreased heart rate. Bradycardias may remain asymptomatic especially due to compensatory mechanisms (in particular increase of left ventricular ejection fraction). Nearly half of acute bradycardias have a reversible cause.

Simvastatin is an anti-hyperlipidemic drug which reduces the cholesterol synthesis and also has anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory and anti-microbial action against the bacteria. This develops the interest of periodontologist to use it in combination with conventional treatment to treat periodontal diseases. The objective of the study was to develop the gel and mouthwash of simvastatin and use it locally to treat gingivitis and periodontitis as an adjunct to scaling and root planning.

Botulinum Neurotoxins have always existed in nature, but its paralytic effect on humans due to the consumption of poorly preserved food was not recognized until 18th century. There are 8 serotypes of botulinum neurotoxins (A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H). Serotype A have been the most recognized one and was initially developed for large scale production in 1940's.

Inflammation and its mediators have an important role in gingivitis and periodontitis. Prostaglandin is one of the eicosanoid involved in many chronic inflammatory diseases, including periodontal diseases. Aspirin irreversibly acetylates cyclooxygenase and inactivate this enzyme responsible for the production of PGE that mediates pain and inflammation.

Background: Sleep disturbances, such as insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness, and poor-quality sleep, are common among nursing students and are closely linked with academic performance.

Objectives: To examine the prevalence of sleep disturbances and academic performances in male and female nursing students and to determine gender-specific effects on the relationship between sleep disturbances and academic performance.

Design: A cross-sectional study design was adopted.

Background: Caesarean section (CS) delivery has a significant effect on maternal and neonatal health especially in a developing country like Bangladesh. The aim of the study was to determine the risk factors and their individual contribution to CS delivery among Bangladeshi married women in reproductive age.

Methods: The cross sectional secondary data was used in this study.

This study aimed to evaluate growth behaviour of Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella spp., and background microbiota in ground lean camel meat during refrigerated storage for up to 7 d, and determine thermal inactivation parameters (D and z-values) of the pathogens in the meat. Fresh ground camel meat samples were individually inoculated with two isolates of each E.

Multiple Rotavirus A (RVA) strains are linked with gastrointestinal infections in children that fall in age bracket of 0 to 60 months. However, the problem is augmented with emergence of unique strains that reassort with RVA strains of animal origin. The study describes the sequence analysis of a rare G6P[1] rotavirus strain isolated from a less than 1 year old child, during rotavirus surveillance in Rawalpindi district, Pakistan in 2010.

Amitriptyline, an agent universally used to treat depression, has an anti-inflammatory activity and a potential for lowering inflammatory mediators. Periodontal diseases like gingivitis and periodontitis if untreated contributes to gingival tissue destruction and bone resorption. These diseases are commonly treated with conventional non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents and antibiotics along with standard periodontal treatment.

In the present study, cyanobacterium isolate CHS1 isolated from Hopar glacier, Pakistan, was analyzed for the first time for cell membrane fatty acids and production of pigments. Sequencing of the 16-23S intergenetic region confirmed identification of the isolate CHS1 as Nodularia spumigena. All chlorophyll and carotenoid pigments were quantified using high-performance liquid chromatography and experiments to test tolerance against a range of physico-chemical conditions were conducted.

Aim: The association of excision repair cross-complementing 1 mRNA (ERCC-1 mRNA) expression with the outcome has been reported with immunohistochemistry (IHC) using tumor tissue in head and neck cancer. We evaluated ERCC-1 mRNA expression by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) from peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) as bio-predictor of locoregional failure (LRF) to chemoradiation (CRT) for locally advanced laryngeal squamous cell cancer (LALSCC).

Methods: A total of 107 male patients with LALSCC were enrolled in this prospective study.

Catheter-induced coronary artery dissection is a serious complication of coronary angiography. Percutaneous intervention is usually indicated in case of large spiral dissections, however, wiring into the true lumen can be challenging. This case reports the novel use of intravascular ultrasound-guided rescue percutaneous coronary intervention for stenting an iatrogenic spiral dissection of the right coronary artery.

Aim: Escherichia coli is the conventional choice as the host strain for whole-cell bioreporter construction due to its well-understood genetics and well-established cloning protocols. However, for real-world environmental biosensing applications, it is often beneficial to use a bacterial strain derived directly from the environment under study to better ensure chemical target specificity and optimal response time. The aim of this study was to develop a whole-cell bioreporter for detection of bioavailable mercury by replacing E.

Introduction: Osseodensification preserves bone bulk, facilitates compaction autografting, and deforms trabecular bone in an outward strain, which result in alveolar ridge plastic expansion. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate ridge expansion after osseodensification.

Materials And Methods: Patients treated with implant placement through osseodensification were evaluated.

Polysaccharides including resistant starch are categorized as dietary fiber and are used as an important prebiotic. Similar to soluble fibers, resistant starch also has a number of physiological effects that have been shown to be beneficial for health. Starch hydrolyzing enzymes, most importantly amylases, play essential roles in the production of resistant starch.
