There is concern long-acting beta-agonist (LABA) drugs may increase the risk of asthma mortality. We undertook a systematic review which included the AstraZeneca Formoterol Clinical Trial Safety Database and Novartis Food and Drug Administration Formoterol Briefing Document. Randomised controlled clinical trials of duration > or = 4 weeks that compared formoterol with a non-LABA comparator treatment in asthma were included in a meta-analysis of the risk of all-cause mortality and asthma death.

This adaptive process has been seen as a form of motor learning that copes with changes in physical parameters of the eye and its muscles, brought about by aging or pathology. One would not expect such a motor-repair mechanism to be specific to the visual properties of the target stimulus.

Methods: Mothers of 110 children ages 3-6 completed a survey of maternal attitudes and practices and the Eyberg Child Behavior Inventory (ECBI).
Results: Mothers wanted pediatrician assistance with child behavior concerns.
This article reviews the available evidence as to whether inhaled long acting beta-agonists (LABA) increase the risk of asthma mortality and considers the implications for the use of this treatment in the management of asthma. Randomised controlled trials suggest that LABAs prescribed as monotherapy may increase the risk of asthma death in certain circumstances, such as the unsupervised "off-label" use without concomitant inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) treatment in patients with unstable asthma. However, there is also evidence that the use of LABAs in conjunction with ICS treatment in adult asthma as recommended in current guidelines is not associated with an increased risk of asthma mortality.

The authors concluded that CBT was structured yet flexible, developed self-awareness emphasized social support, and involved therapist empathy and supportiveness. Limitations included the discomfort of discussing personal information and the impact of feeling ill on attendance and homework completion.

While positive results have been consistently reported in numerous in vitro mutagenicity and genotoxicity assays of quercetin, tested in vivo, quercetin has generally produced negative results in such studies. Furthermore, no evidence of carcinogenicity related to the oral administration of quercetin was observed in chronic rodent assays.

Objective: To investigate whether cannabis smoking increases the risk of head and neck cancer.
Design: Case-control study.
Subjects And Methods: Cases of head and neck cancer < or =55 years identified from hospital databases and the Cancer Registry, and controls randomly selected from the electoral roll completed interviewer-administered questionnaires.
To examine Swanson, Nolan, and Pelham-IV (SNAP-IV) psychometric properties, parent (N = 1,613) and teacher (N = 1,205) data were collected from a random elementary school student sample in a longitudinal attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) detection study. SNAP-IV reliability was acceptable. Factor structure indicated two ADHD factors and an oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) factor.

We have previously shown that when a stimulus consisting of two concentric rings moves, saccade latencies are much longer (by 150 ms) when attention is directed to the larger ring than to the smaller ring. Here, we investigated whether this effect can be explained by a deferral of the "cost" of making a saccade while the target remains inside the attentional field, or by purely visual factors (eccentricity or contrast). We found 1) latencies were shorter when attention was directed to small features irrespective of retinal eccentricity; 2) saccade latency distributions were systematically determined by the ratio between the amplitude of the stimulus step and the diameter of the attended ring: stimulus steps that were larger than the attended ring resulted in short latencies, whereas steps smaller than the attended ring resulted in proportionally longer and more variable latencies; 3) this effect was not seen in manual reaction times to the same target movement; and 4) suprathreshold changes in the contrast of targets, mimicking possible attentional effects on perceived contrast and saliency, had little effect on latency.

Nail dyschromia, including melanonychia and erythronychia, encompasses a wide range of possible diagnoses. While the majority of these lesions are benign, malignancies of the nail unit represent a sinister, and potentially life-threatening, cause of nail dyschromia. Unfamiliarity with tumors of the nail apparatus can lead to a delay in diagnosis.

It is important to differentiate these vascular causes from chronic exertional compartment syndrome (CECS), medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS), and stress fractures in order to develop appropriate treatment plans, avoid complications, and return athletes to play expeditiously. Important vascular etiologies to be considered are popliteal artery entrapment syndrome (PAES), endofibrotic disease, popliteal artery aneurysm, cystic adventitial disease, and peripheral arterial dissections.

Predicting the likely success of MR formulations is often difficult before clinical studies. A systematic in vitro approach using mouse and human tissues was adopted to rationalize the in vivo pharmacokinetics of 9- and 15-h MR formulations of an alpha-adrenoreceptor antagonist, 4-amino-6,7-dimethoxy-2-(5-methanesulfonamido-1,2,3,4 tetrahydroisoquinol-2-yl)-5-(2-pyridyl)quinazoline (UK-338,003).

Because a number of biological properties of quercetin may be beneficial to human health, interest in the addition of this flavonol to various traditional food products has been increasing. Prior to the use of quercetin in food applications that would increase intake beyond that from naturally-occurring levels of the flavonol in the typical Western diet, its safety needs to be established or confirmed.

For the acute study, Fisher-344 rats were administered WGP 3-6 via gavage at a dose of 2000 mg/kg body weight, and any evidence of toxicity was monitored over a 14-day period. WGP 3-6 was well tolerated, indicating that the LD(50) value is greater than 2000 mg/kg body weight.

The first phase of parent-child interaction therapy (PCIT), called child-directed interaction, teaches parents to use positive and differential social attention to improve the parent-child relationship. This study examined predictors of change in mother and child functioning during the child-directed interaction for 100 mother-child dyads. The children were 3-6-years-old and diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder.
