We analyzed the nature of spontaneous mutations at the autosomal locus coding for adenine phosphoribosyltransferase in the human colorectal carcinoma cell line SW620 to establish whether distinctive mutational pathways exist that might underlie the more complex genome rearrangements arising in tumor cells. Point mutations occur at a low rate in aprt hemizygotes derived from SW620, largely as a result of base substitutions at G.C base pairs to yield transversions and transitions.

Although the preparation contained a single contaminant the enzyme could be unambiguously identified as a dimer of subunit molar mass 45 kDa having an absorption spectrum consistent with the presence of pyridoxamine phosphate as cofactor. The cofactor was released by treatment with strong phosphate at low pH and was identified and quantified fluorimetrically.

The death of tens of thousands of common seals (Phoca vitulina) around the coast of Europe in 1988 provoked wide interest in the popular press, but it also raised questions about the importance of mass mortality in the dynamics of marine mammal populations. Here, we summarize published information on the occurrence of mass mortalities among marine mammals and review the mathematical models that have been developed to investigate the role of such disasters in population dynamics. We conclude that mass mortalities may play a more important role than density-dependent factors in the dynamics of some marine mammal populations.

Administration of endotoxin from Salmonella abortus equi led to a decrease in the polyunsaturated fatty acid content of livers from mice sensitized with Bacille Calmette Guérin (BCG). The content of arachidonic acid fell significantly in both the phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylinositol fractions whereas in the phosphatidylethanolamine fraction the linoleic acid content was significantly reduced.

Infection with BCG resulted in (1) an increase in the polyunsaturated to saturated fatty acid ratio of phospholipids and (2) a decrease in the total triacylglycerol fatty acid content of spleen, liver and peritoneal macrophages. In the testes, autoradiographic studies showed receptors in the interstitium in all species. Results from four different types of experiment show that this inhibition is due to an action of fluazifop on acetyl-CoA carboxylase and not on fatty acid synthetase. The acetyl-CoA carboxylase from sensitive barley (Hordeum vulgare), but not from resistant pea (Pisum sativum), is inhibited by the R stereoisomer, a finding that agrees with the herbicidal specificity of fluazifop.
