Nerve cells require trophic signals transmitted from the nerve terminal via the axon in order to survive and develop normally. As the axon may be more than a meter long, specialised mechanisms are needed to transmit these signals. This involves the retrograde axonal transport of signalling endosomes containing nerve growth factor (NGF) and other synaptically derived molecules.

An update on in vitro methods employed to assess iron bioavailability is presented. Solubility and dialyzability are not useful predictors of iron absorption, whereas Caco-2 cell models provide useful comparisons on the availability of iron from different sources. Strengths and weaknesses of in vitro approaches are briefly described, including the need to characterize Caco-2 cells in order to interpret results correctly.

The purinergic receptor P2X(7) is activated by extracellular adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) and promotes the efficient release of interleukin-1 beta. The authors examine protein and molecular expression of the P2X(7) receptor and its ability to stimulate interleukin-1 beta release in cord blood mononuclear cells (CBMCs) from placentae of term nonlaboring and laboring women. They show both mRNA and protein (78 kDa) expression for the P2X( 7) receptor in CBMCs of parturient and nonparturient women.

Dietary intakes of zinc are lower in the elderly because of reduced energy requirements, and it is not clear whether ageing impacts on adaptive homeostatic mechanisms, namely absorptive efficiency and endogenous losses in the GI tract. Physiological requirements for zinc are unlikely to change significantly, but there are several attributes of ageing that may affect aspects of zinc metabolism (e.g.

Although host proteases are often considered to have a negative impact upon heterologous protein production by filamentous fungi, relatively little is known about the pattern of their appearance in recombinant fungal bioprocesses. In the present study, we investigated extracellular proteases from a filamentous fungus, Aspergillus niger B1-D, genetically modified to secrete hen egg white lysozyme (HEWL). Our findings indicate that extracellular protease activity is only detected after the carbon source is completely utilised in batch cultures.

The parasympathetic (P) nervous system is thought to contribute significantly to focal atrial fibrillation (AF). Thus we hypothesized that P nerve fibers [and related muscarinic (M(2)) receptors] are preferentially located in the posterior left atrium (PLA) and that selective cholinergic blockade in the PLA can be successfully performed to alter vagal AF substrate. The PLA, pulmonary veins (PVs), and left atrial appendage (LAA) from six dogs were immunostained for sympathetic (S) nerves, P nerves, and M(2) receptors.

In the present study, we used a recombinant filamentous fungus strain, Aspergillus niger B1-D, as a model system, and investigated the antioxidant defences in this organism. Our findings indicate that pretreatment with low concentrations of H(2)O(2) completely prevents killing by this oxidant at high concentrations. It shows that A.

In the event of a large scale, biological or chemical terrorist attack it is unlikely that local emergency response organizations will have sufficient quantities of dedicated ambulances to evacuate all of the affected victims. As a potential solution to this problem, we have developed a device that can be retrofitted to a variety of government or civilian utility vehicles in order to convert them for emergency medical transport (US Pat. 7,028,351).

The need for effective bioprocess (fermentation) monitoring is growing in importance due to the rapid pace of change in the fermentation industry, and attendant financial pressures. Vibrational spectroscopy has shown great promise in bioprocess monitoring. In particular, recently attention has been focused on the capability of mid infrared spectroscopy (MIRS) to monitor multiple analytes in highly complex fermentation fluids.

Background And Purpose: Weakness in partially paralysed muscles is a disabling impairment for people with neurological conditions. Strength training programmes are widely administered to address this impairment. There is a common belief that the effectiveness of strength training programmes can be enhanced by the addition of electrical stimulation.

To develop further our understanding of initial dietary copper metabolism, a method has been developed to separate plasma copper that is bound to albumin, from that bound to ceruloplasmin. This method has been tested using plasma samples from a pilot study involving six human volunteers who consumed 3mg oral doses of the stable isotope (65)Cu and gave blood samples at timed intervals up to 7 days. The results suggest that this method can be used to monitor dynamic fluctuations in newly absorbed copper over a short time frame.

Background And Purpose: The extensibility of the paralysed flexor pollicis longus (FPL) muscle is an important determinant of an effective tenodesis grip in people with C6 and C7 tetraplegia. Therapists believe that splinting can reduce the extensibility of the FPL muscle and thus improve hand function. However, there remains much controversy around the optimal position of splinting and its effectiveness is yet to be verified.

The application of near infrared spectroscopy in bioprocessing has been limited by its dependence on calibrations derived from single bioreactor at a given time. Here, we propose a multiplexed calibration technique which allows calibrations to be built from multiple bioreactors run in parallel. This gives the flexibility to monitor multiple vessels and facilitates calibration model transfer between bioreactors.

Attenuated total reflectance mid infrared (ATR-MIR) spectroscopy is a potential technique for the near real-time monitoring of filamentous bioprocesses. Here we investigate the utility of ATR-MIR to monitor and predict concentrations of glycerol and product (clavulanic acid) in a complex antibiotic bioprocess. Streptomyces clavuligerus exhibits filamentous growth, thus, as biomass accumulates the process fluid becomes much more viscous, and develops pronounced non-Newtonian behaviour.
