Article Synopsis
  • - This study investigates the relationship between lung-specific soluble lectins (SP-A, SP-D) and other lectins (MBL, FCN1) in COVID-19 patients to assess their potential clinical significance.
  • - Out of 131 COVID-19 patients, those with severe symptoms showed higher levels of SP-D and lower MBL compared to non-severe patients, indicating these lectins might reflect disease severity.
  • - Findings suggest that SP-A and SP-D are more closely associated with chest CT imaging results than traditional biomarkers like IL-6, LDH, and CRP, highlighting their potential for better assessing lung conditions in COVID-19.

Article Synopsis
  • Behçet's disease (BD) is a recurring inflammatory condition that affects multiple systems, and anti-TNFα agents are used to treat severe or resistant cases of intestinal BD.
  • A study analyzed the medical records of 29 patients treated with anti-TNFα agents from January 2009 to June 2020, finding that 75.9% continued treatment for 48 weeks, and notable rates of marked improvement and mucosal healing were observed.
  • The research concluded that while many patients continued treatment, a higher baseline C-reactive protein (CRP) level (≥1 mg/dL) was linked to a greater likelihood of discontinuation.

Daikenchuto (TU-100) is herbal medicine which predominantly contains ginger, Japanese pepper, and ginseng. We investigated whether TU-100 can affect the composition of gut flora and intestinal tumor development using Apc mice, a murine model of intestinal tumor. Bacterial 16S rRNA sequencing and short-chain fatty acid analysis were performed on faecal samples.

Autoimmune enteropathy (AIE) is a rare disease, characterized by intractable diarrhea, villous atrophy of the small intestine, and the presence of circulating anti-enterocyte autoantibodies. Immune dysregulation, polyendocrinopathy, enteropathy, X-linked (IPEX) syndrome, and mutations in FOXP3, which is a master gene of regulatory T cells (Tregs), are major causes of AIE. Recent studies have demonstrated that mutations in other Treg-associated genes, such as CD25 and CTLA4, show an IPEX-like phenotype.

Background: Cigarette smoking is known to be a significant risk factor associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). We aimed to examine the association between smoking status and the severity of fatty liver with regard to sex and smoking cessation.

Methods: In total, 13,466 subjects (6,642 males and 6,824 females) who had undergone abdominal ultrasonography for health check-up, multivariable logistic regression analysis was retrospectively conducted to assess the association between smoking status and the prevalence of NAFLD stratified by sex after adjusting for other potential confounders.

Chest wall tumors are relatively rare, and hematogenous metastasis to the chest wall is very rare. We herein describe a rare case of occult thyroid carcinoma as metastasis to the chest wall in an 80-year-old woman. The patient received detailed examinations of the chest wall tumor, and the results suggested that she had occult thyroid carcinoma.
