Animals show diverse processes of gametogenesis in the evolutionary pathway. Here, we characterized the spermatogenic cells in the testis of the marine invertebrate sperm differentiate in a non-cystic type of testis, comprising many follicles with various sizes and stages of spermatogenic cells. In the space among follicles, we observed free cells that were recognized by antibody against Müllerian inhibiting substance, a marker for vertebrate Sertoli cells.

We investigated d-amino acids as potential inhibitors targeting l-peptide toxins. Among the l- and d-amino acids tested, we found that d-tryptophan (d-Trp) acted as an inhibitor of melittin-induced hemolysis. We then evaluated various Trp derivatives and found that 5-chlorotryptamine (5CT) had the largest inhibitory effect on melittin.

It is known that tumor cells have a lower pH compared to normal cells. We have designed peptides that have no definite structure at neutral pH but at lower pH penetrate into the cell membrane by forming an α-helix structure and thus damage tumor cells selectively. These peptides were designed by combining a pH-responsive artificially designed α-helix structure and a flanking sequence that controls membrane insertion.

The design of scaffolds for solubilizing/dispersing poorly water-soluble bioactive molecules in neutral aqueous media is a major challenge of functional food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics development, as highlighted by the plethora of corresponding solubilization/dispersion strategies. Herein, renatured β-1,3-1,6-glucan (r-glucan) nanoparticles prepared by neutralization of alkali-denatured β-1,3-1,6-glucan and subsequent centrifugation are used as a host to disperse water-insoluble bioactive molecules (curcumin, all-trans-retinoic acid, and rebamipide) by simple mixing of host and guest solutions. Curcumin in the r-glucan cavity is found to be stacked in the form of J-aggregates and twisted along the helix, and is demonstrated to be retained for significantly longer than curcumin in the corresponding γ-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) complex.

We investigated lichen species in the habitats of the copper (Cu)-hyperaccumulating moss Scopelophila cataractae and found that the cup lichens Cladonia subconistea and C. humilis grow on this moss. We performed X-ray fluorescence and inductively coupled plasma mass (ICP-MS) analysis of lichen samples and measured the visible absorption spectra of the pigments extracted from the samples to assess the effect of Cu stress on the cup lichens.
