A light-emitting diode (LED) system covering plant-receptive wavebands from ultraviolet to far-red radiation (360 to 760 nm, "white" light spectrum) was investigated for greenhouse productions of L. Qualitative and quantitative composition of non-structural carbohydrates comprising glucose, fructose, sucrose and fructooligosaccharides (FOS) is one of the key determinants of market suitability, storability and technological processability of onions. Various vibrational spectroscopy methods have been applied to classify different fennel chemotypes according to their individual profile of volatile substances. Intact fennel fruits of different chemotypes could be successfully discriminated by attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) and near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. Solvent extracts (CCl4) of the considered fennel fruits showed characteristic fingerprints with marker bands related to the individual volatile components (trans-anethole, fenchone, estragole, piperitenone oxide, γ-asarone, limonene) for ATR-FTIR and FT-Raman spectroscopy.

FT-Raman spectroscopy was used for the first time for in situ identification of aspalathin and quantification of the dihyrochalcones in dried, green rooibos (Aspalathus linearis). With the support of two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy, characteristic key bands of aspalathin, the main flavonoid and antioxidant occurring in rooibos, were localized and identified in the spectra obtained from various plant samples. Application of Raman mapping revealed the spatial distribution of this valuable dihydrochalcone within the intact dried leaves.

The essential oils of different spices and aroma plants were investigated fast and nondestructively by means of Raman spectroscopy. The main ingredients of these oils, mostly monoterpenes and phenylpropane derivatives, were identified. A hierarchical cluster analysis shows that the oils of the investigated plants cluster chemotaxonomically, which means according to their chemical composition and not according to their botanical degree of relationship.
