Context: The Open Landing Error Scoring System (OpenLESS) is a novel development aimed at automating the LESS for assessment of lower extremity movement quality during a jump-landing task. With increasing utilization of clinical measures to monitor outcomes and limited time during clinical visits for a lengthy analysis of functional movement, there is a pressing need to extend automation efforts. Addressing these issues, OpenLESS is an open-source tool that utilizes a freely available markerless motion capture system to automate the LESS using three-dimensional kinematics.

Background: Muscular strength deficits are common after ACL injury. While the Limb Symmetry Index (LSI), using the uninvolved limb as a reference, is widely used, negative strength adaptations may affect both limbs post-injury. It is uncertain how the strength of the uninvolved limb in those with an ACL injury compares to uninjured individuals, making it unclear whether it is appropriate as a benchmark for determining sufficient strength.

Grain boundaries are critical in determining the properties of materials, including mechanical stability, conductivity, and corrosion resistance. The specific properties of materials depend not only on the misorientation of the crystals, the three most commonly characterized parameters, but also on the angle of the grain boundary plane between the two crystals, the final two parameters in the five-parameter macroscopic description of the grain boundary. The method presented here allows for the direct measurement of all five parameters of the grain boundary in a transmission electron microscopy specimen of various morphologies.

Background: Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy is commonly used for respiratory failure due to severe COVID-19 pneumonitis, including in patients deemed not likely to benefit from invasive mechanical ventilation (nIMV). Little evidence exists demonstrating superiority over conventional oxygen therapy, whilst ward-level delivery of CPAP presents practical challenges. We sought to compare clinical outcomes of oxygen therapy versus CPAP therapy in patients with COVID-19 who were nIMV.

The Estonian study of Chernobyl cleanup workers was one of the first investigations to evaluate the possible health consequences of working in the Chernobyl area (the 30 km exclusion zone and/or adjacent territories) after the 1986 reactor accident. The cohort consists of 4831 men who were dispatched in 1986-1991 for tasks involving decontamination, construction of buildings, transport, radiation measurement, guard duty or other activities. By 31 December 2012, the follow-up of the cohort yielded 102 158 person-years of observation.

Article Synopsis
  • Atom-probe tomography (APT) is a powerful technique that offers detailed analysis of grain boundaries at the atomic level but struggles with capturing larger features due to its small sample size.
  • A new method combines transmission electron microscopy (TEM) with focused-ion-beam (FIB) techniques to accurately select and extract mesoscale features from bulk samples for APT analysis.
  • This approach has been successfully used to extract a prior austenite grain boundary in martensitic steel and is applicable to other structural features like interfaces, precipitates, and crack tips.

Purpose: We sought to further localize radioiodine activity in the mouth on post-thyroid cancer therapy imaging using single-photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT).

Materials And Methods: We retrospectively reviewed all patients (58) who underwent thyroid cancer therapy with iodine-131 (131I) at our institution from August 2009 to March 2011 whose post-therapy radioiodine imaging included neck SPECT/CT. A small group (six) of diagnostic 131I scans including SPECT/CT was also reviewed.

Imaging by ultrasonography or scintigraphy may assist in the diagnosis and management of tunnel infections of the peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter. Here, we report a case of tunnel infection in which imaging with positron-emission tomography (PET) correctly predicted failure of conservative management. A 61-year-old man with diabetic nephropathy commenced PD in January 2008.

In addition to local causes--for example, leak of dialysate into an inguinal hernia sac or into the anterior abdominal wall through the track of the catheter for continuous peritoneal dialysis (CPD)--scrotal edema in CPD patients may result from generalized volume retention. We present 2 CPD patients with scrotal edema, illustrating the diagnosis and management of the mechanisms of volume retention. A man with hypertensive nephrosclerosis developed isolated scrotal edema 14 months after an uneventful course of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD).

While anemia is common in patients on chronic hemodialysis (HD), spontaneous erythrocytosis is rare and can be caused by either the same conditions causing erythrocytosis in the general population or any condition specific to chronic renal failure. We present a patient illustrating this latter circumstance. A 53-year-old man with diabetic nephropathy, with no known disease causing hypoxemia started HD in April 2001.

We report a patient with scleroderma, renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and membranous nephropathy (MN). Certain clinical and laboratory features suggested that RCC caused or enhanced the other two conditions. A 55-year-old man developed scleroderma which progressed rapidly during its first 2 years with development of hypertension and acute renal failure, peak serum creatinine (SCr) 327 micromol/l (3.
