Aims: The issue of leptin as a putative state marker of alcohol use and its role in craving has been raised in the last few years. Recently, a strong GABA-ergic modulation of leptin was postulated. The aim of the pilot study was to examine leptin levels in correlation with the strongly GABA-mimetic active substance clomethiazole.

We present a high-speed communication infrastructure for a waferscale neuromorphic system, based on application-specific neuromorphic communication ICs in an field programmable gate arrays (FPGA)-maintained environment. The ICs implement configurable axonal delays, as required for certain types of dynamic processing or for emulating spike-based learning among distant cortical areas.

Peripheral T cell lymphomas with follicular T helper phenotype: a new basket or a distinct entity? Revising Karl Lennert's personal archive.

Aims: To revise 25 cases selected from Karl Lennert's personal archive (21) and Bologna and Frankfurt Registries (four) because of cytological similarities.

Methods And Results: All cases were provided with paraffin blocks and studied by immunohistochemistry and molecular techniques. While phenotyping was very informative, among molecular studies only EBER in situ-hybridization (ISH) was successful.

Small interfering RNA efficiently suppresses adhesion molecule expression on pulmonary microvascular endothelium.

Background. Adhesion molecules are known to influence postoperative organ function, they are hardly involved in the inflammatory response following the ischemia-reperfusion injury. We sought to investigate the potency of small interfering RNAs to suppress adhesion molecule expression in human pulmonary microvascular endothelial cells.

Characterization of sialic acid index of plasma apolipoprotein J and phosphatidylethanol during alcohol detoxification--a pilot study.

Background: Apolipoprotein J (ApoJ) is a component of plasma high-density lipoproteins. Previous studies have shown progressive recovery of ApoJ sialic acid content with increased duration of alcohol abstinence. Therefore, the sialic acid index of plasma apolipoprotein J (SIJ) seems to be a promising alcohol biomarker.

Unifying intensity noise and second-order coherence properties of amplified spontaneous emission sources.

We present joint investigations of relative intensity noise (RIN) and second-order coherence properties of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) generated by a superluminescent diode. We introduce a generalized intensity noise description for ASE sources that contains the shot noise contribution but also accounts for first- and second-order coherence properties reflecting the process of light generation. We find excellent agreement between pump-current-dependent RIN values and this new description, with the perspective of particular interesting consequences for the realization of low-noise broadband emitters.

Intrinsic reaction parameters for electron transfer from aromatic radical anions to vicinal dibromoalkanes in alkane solutions.

In diffusion-assisted bimolecular reactions, the elementary reaction mechanism is typically difficult to study, because the kinetics of the intrinsic reaction is masked by the diffusive motion of the reactants. One of the possible experimental approaches to solve the problem is the precise determination of the effective reaction radii, R = k/(4πD(S)), where k is the stationary value of the reaction rate constant and D(S) is the sum of the diffusion coefficients of the reactants involved. In this work, this approach has been applied to study the reaction between radical anions of aromatic compounds (diphenylacetylene and diphenylsilane) and vicinal dibromoalkanes (1,2-dibromoethane and trans-1,2-dibromocyclohexane) in liquid alkanes.

Aim: In this study a computer-assisted cognitive training programme (CAT) was compared to a paper-pencil-cognitive training and evaluated in psychiatric patients for its effects on neuropsychological parameters, mood and dysfunctional cognitions.

Methods: A total of 29 subjects were randomized either to the computer group or the paper-pencil group. Both groups underwent 20 sessions cognitive training.

A variety of ion channels are supposed to orchestrate the homoeostatic volume regulation in T lymphocytes. However, the relative contribution of different potassium channels to the osmotic volume regulation and in particular to the regulatory volume decrease (RVD) in T cells is far from clear. This study explores a putative role of the newly identified K(2P) channels (TASK1, TASK2, TASK3 and TRESK) along with the voltage-gated potassium channel K(V)1.

Evaluation of axillary lymph node status by sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) and complete axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) are an inherent part of breast cancer treatment. Increased understanding of tumor biology has changed the prognostic and therapeutic impact of lymph node status. Non-invasive imaging techniques like axillary ultrasound, FDG-PET, or MRI revealed moderate sensitivity and high specificity in evaluation of lymph node status.

Overexpression of the messenger RNA (mRNA)-binding protein HuR is an important feature of many tumors and in most cases correlates with a high-grade malignancy. Since phosphorylation of HuR by protein kinase C δ (PKCδ) at serine (Ser) 318 implies an important mode in HuR regulation, we studied its functional role in dysregulated HuR and related functions in colon carcinoma cells. Coimmunoprecipitation experiments revealed a high-constitutive association of nuclear PKCδ with HuR.

A helminth immunomodulator exploits host signaling events to regulate cytokine production in macrophages.

Parasitic worms alter their host's immune system to diminish the inflammatory responses directed against them, using very efficient immunomodulating molecules. We have previously shown that the helminth immunomodulator cystatin (AvCystatin) profoundly reduces the progression of inflammatory diseases via modulation of macrophages. Here we elucidate the signaling events in macrophages triggered by AvCystatin.

A chemically defined production process for highly attenuated poxviruses.

Highly attenuated poxviruses are promising vectors for protective and therapeutic vaccines. These vectors do not replicate in human cells and can therefore be safely given even to immunocompromised recipients. They can accommodate very large inserts and provide strong stimulation of the immune system against the vectored antigen.

Genome-scale phylogenetics: inferring the plant tree of life from 18,896 gene trees.

Phylogenetic analyses using genome-scale data sets must confront incongruence among gene trees, which in plants is exacerbated by frequent gene duplications and losses. Gene tree parsimony (GTP) is a phylogenetic optimization criterion in which a species tree that minimizes the number of gene duplications induced among a set of gene trees is selected.
