Importance: There are no medications approved by authorities for the treatment of amphetamine or methamphetamine dependence, and studies investigating the effectiveness of pharmacological treatments in hard outcomes, such as hospitalization and death, are lacking.

Objective: To investigate the association between pharmacotherapies and hospitalization and mortality outcomes in persons with amphetamine or methamphetamine use disorder.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This nationwide register-based cohort study was conducted from July 2006 to December 2018 with a median (IQR) follow-up time of 3.

Cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) have emerged as sustainable options for a wide range of applications. However, the high aspect ratio and biopersistence of CNFs raise concerns about potential health effects. Here, we evaluated the in vivo pulmonary and systemic toxicity of unmodified (U-CNF), carboxymethylated (C-CNF), and TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-piperidin-1-oxyl)-oxidized (T-CNF) CNFs, fibrillated in the same way and administered to mice by repeated (3×) pharyngeal aspiration (14, 28, and 56 μg/mouse/aspiration).

Background: Cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) have emerged as a sustainable and environmentally friendly option for a broad range of applications. The fibrous nature and high biopersistence of CNFs call for a thorough toxicity assessment, but it is presently unclear which physico-chemical properties could play a role in determining the potential toxic response to CNF. Here, we assessed whether surface composition and size could modulate the genotoxicity of CNFs in human bronchial epithelial BEAS-2B cells.

Wood-derived nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) has emerged as a sustainable material with a wide range of applications and increasing presence in the market. Surface charges are introduced during the preparation of NFC to facilitate the defibrillation process, which may also alter the toxicological properties of NFC. In the present study, we examined the in vitro toxicity of NFCs with five surface chemistries: nonfunctionalized, carboxymethylated, phosphorylated, sulfoethylated, and hydroxypropyltrimethylammonium-substituted.

We studied the genotoxicity and cellular uptake of nanosized (<50 nm) and fine (<10 μm) copper oxide (CuO) particles in vitro in human bronchial epithelial (BEAS-2B) cells. In addition, the effect of dispersing the particles using bovine serum albumin (BSA) on DNA damage induction was investigated. DNA damage was assessed by the alkaline comet (single cell gel electrophoresis) assay after 3-h, 6-h and 24-h exposures.

The design of water treatment plants requires simultaneous analysis of technical, economic and environmental aspects, identified by multiple conflicting objectives. We demonstrated the advantages of an interactive multiobjective optimization (MOO) method over a posteriori methods in an unexplored field, namely the design of a biological treatment plant for drinking water production, that tackles the process drawbacks, contrarily to what happens in a traditional volumetric-load-driven design procedure. Specifically, we consider a groundwater denitrification biofilter, simulated by the Activated Sludge Model modified with two-stage denitrification kinetics.

Nanoceria has a broad variety of industrial and pharmacological applications due to its antioxidant activity. Nanoceria can be modified by surface coating with polyelectrolyte brushes. Brushes can increase the surface charge of nanoceria, providing greater aqueous stability while reducing agglomeration.

In order to evaluate the possibility of using endosseal implants (ITI Dental Implant System) and implant-retained prostheses for 65-year-old patients from a medium-sized Finnish city, 431 such patients were examined by means of panoramic radiographs. The population represents 61% of the total age group in the city (born in 1923). The possibility to construct a prosthesis, anchored on implants, was evaluated in three different groups.

All the 1012, 55-yr-old citizens of Oulu (a medium-sized Finnish town) were invited to a clinical examination, and 780 of them participated. The associations of lifestyle with periodontal health were analyzed in the 527 dentate subjects. Periodontal pockets deeper than 3 mm were recorded as a percentage of the surfaces at risk.

In order to evaluate general and local contraindications for implantation for 65-yr-old subjects from a medium-sized Finnish city, 431 such persons were examined anamnestically and by means of panoramic radiographs. The population represents 61% of the total age group in the city (born in 1923). It was shown that several degrees of cardiac problems and increased blood pressure followed by pulmonary diseases and diabetes were the most commonly encountered relative contraindications for implantation.

Eight hundred seventy-six men and women with diastolic blood pressure (DBP) of 95-115 mm Hg during a 4-week placebo period were included in a multicenter trial; 479 patients had previously been treated for hypertension. The patients were randomized to receive isradipine or metoprolol; both groups were comparable for age, weight, height, smoking habits, and duration of hypertension. By the end of the placebo period, 79 patients did not fulfill the final entry criteria and were withdrawn.

Sixty patients with mild to moderate essential hypertension, uncontrolled with diuretics alone, were evaluated in a double-blind randomized study that compared the effect of indoramin plus hydrochlorothiazide with that of pindolol plus hydrochlorothiazide. Following a 2-week period during which the patients were treated with 50 mg/day of hydrochlorothiazide, the patients were treated either with indoramin, 50-100 mg/day (n = 29), or with pindolol 10-20 mg/day (n = 30), in addition to the diuretic for 12 weeks. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures were significantly reduced after 2 weeks of treatment with indoramin or pindolol; blood pressure reduction was maintained for the 12 weeks of treatment.

40 patients with paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia were allocated to two different treatment groups according to their year of birth. Those patients born on odd years were given 5 mg of practolol intravenously, those born on even years receiving 5 mg of verapamil, and if the tachycardia continued, the same injection was repeated after 5 minutes. If practolol treatment failed, the patient was given 5 mg of verapamil half an hour later, and vice versa.

A survey is presented on the results of 100 consecutive patients who underwent mitral valve (78 patients) or mitral and aortic and/or tricuspid valve replacement (22 patients) with ball or disc valve prosthesis. The patients were followed-up from 6 to 54 months postoperatively. The mortality for mitral valve replacement was 13 (17%) early deaths (up to one month from operation) and 5 (6%) late deaths.
