Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness, safety, and patient tolerance of hysterosalpingo-foam sonography (HyFosy) compared to other tests for assessing tubal patency, using data from 20 studies published between 2012 and January 2023.
  • - Results showed that HyFosy matched laparoscopy results in 94% of cases and had similar effectiveness to hysterosalpingography (HSG) for identifying tubal patency, but was associated with less pain and side effects.
  • - The authors recommend using HyFosy as a first-line method for assessing tubal patency and stress the importance of updating guidelines to include and standardize this procedure.

Yttrium is a heavy rare earth element (REE) that acquires remarkable characteristics when it is in oxide form and doped with other REEs. Owing to these characteristics Y O can be used in the manufacture of several products. However, a supply deficit of this mineral is expected in the coming years, contributing to its price fluctuation.

Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is a safe and noninvasive imaging technique that can characterize and evaluate liver lesions, and has been approved for this use in the Unites States since 2016. CEUS has been shown to be similar in accuracy to computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for noninvasive diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and offers several advantages in certain patient populations who have contraindications for CT or MRI. However, CEUS has inherent limitations and has not been widely employed for evaluation of HCC.

Varicella Zoster when described has the typical presentation of a dermatomal distribution of a rash and can further lead to CNS complications. This can be treated accordingly with the proper protocol, but if the presentation is atypical and the protocol is challenged or changed per specific patient outcomes, new developments can occur. Here we present a case of a 29-year-old Caucasian female that presented to the emergency department with headache, photophobia, and chills for 5 days.

Background: We investigated the coagulation effects in vitro of exogenous oxytocin in whole blood of healthy term parturients.

Methods: Thromboelastography (TEG®) was performed on kaolin-activated citrated blood samples from 25 healthy, term, nonlaboring parturients. We compared the in vitro effects on the maternal thromboelastographic profile of 3 different exogenous oxytocin concentrations (22.

Background: In this study, we assessed the relationship between coagulation parameters using kaolin-activated thromboelastography (TEG®) and total estimated blood loss (EBL) in patients undergoing elective cesarean delivery (CD).

Methods: TEG® parameters were recorded in 52 patients before and after elective CD. Laboratory markers of coagulation (prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, fibrinogen) were also assessed in a smaller subset (21 patients).

Socioemotional selectivity theory (Carstensen, 1995) posits a "positivity effect" in older adults, describing an increasing tendency to attend to, process, interpret, and remember events and others in life in a positive fashion as one ages. Drawing on personal construct theory, Viney (1993) observes increasing integration of constructions of self with others across the lifespan. The current study extends assessment of the positivity effect, integrating it with personal construct theory, by use of Repertory Grid (RepGrid) analysis.

Sociocultural and attachment processes were integrated into a single model predicting eating disorder symptomatology to determine their relative influence. Using normative, self-report data from 146 female undergraduates, path analyses tested the fit of a conceptual model with two hypothesized pathways: (1) higher awareness of sociocultural values about appearance would lead to less perceived appearance satisfaction which would, in turn, lead to eating disordered behavior, and (2) attachment avoidance and anxiety (modeled separately) across mother, father, and romantic partner domains would predict psychological correlates of eating disorders, thereby increasing risk for disordered behaviors. Although both were significant, the sociocultural path was slightly stronger (beta=-.

Objective: To validate a model we developed while trying to understand why pregnant teens so often report that they did not want to become pregnant and could have obtained contraceptives before they conceived.

Method: The study enrolled a racially/ethnically diverse group of 351 teenagers. Participants completed a questionnaire that asked about teen pregnancy risk factors, the expected effects of childbearing, the desire to remain non-pregnant, deterrents to contraceptive use, and contraceptive plans.

Objective: To establish the relationship between expectations about the effects of childbearing on specific aspects of life and the strength of the desire to remain nonpregnant during adolescence. We hypothesized that the absence of negative childbearing expectations is associated with an increase in the odds that sexually active, inadequately contracepting teenage girls are cognitively susceptible to conception.

Method: A racially and ethnically diverse group of 351 nulligravida, inadequately contracepting teenagers was studied.

Within the field of personality and social psychology, there has been historical controversy over whether constructs such as self-esteem are stable over time and situation or whether they are changeable. One response to this question has been to invoke two types of self-esteem or self-worth, trait self-esteem and state self-esteem. Thus it has been asserted that adolescents, the participants in this paper, have both a baseline self-esteem as well as a barometric self-esteem that represents short-term fluctuations (Rosenberg, 1986).

In spite of sensitivity to right frontal lobe dysfunction, the Design Fluency Test (DFT) has been limited by one global score with little psychometric data. This study developed an expanded scoring system with standardized instructions for multiple dimensions of design performance and provided reliability and validity data in a college (n = 64) and diverse neuropsychological sample (n = 165). The scoring system allowed reliable scoring of number of novel designs, complexity of designs, variations in designs, and concrete, frankly perseverative, and scribbled responses.

On the archaeological site of Menez-Dregan in Brittany, France, dated 300,000-500,000 years-old, paleoparasitological analysis of cave deposits led to the detection of well-preserved helminth eggs, which morphology and morphometry pointed to the diagnosis of Toxocara canis eggs, a parasite of carnivore mammals. Paleolithic remains suggested a parasitism of the hyena Crocuta spelaea or other canids that inhabited the region.

For the first time, a jar of embalming rejects was studied in search for helminth parasite eggs. This kind of jar was used to put discarded material by Egyptian embalmers during mummification process. Ascaris lumbricoides and Taenia saginata eggs were found in the linen and strip fragment contents of the jar, dated of 2,715-2,656 years ago.

Paleoparasitology in the Old World has mainly concerned the study of latrine sediments and coprolites collected from mummified bodies or archaeological strata, mostly preserved by natural conditions. Human parasites recovered include cestodes, trematodes, and nematodes. The well preserved conditions of helminth eggs allowed paleoepidemiological approaches taking into account the number of eggs found by archaeological stratum.

This study investigated different sedimentation measurement techniques and examined patterns of short-term sedimentation in two 1-ha replicate created freshwater marshes in central Ohio, USA. Short-term (one-year) sediment accumulation above feldspar, clay, glitter, and sand artificial marker horizons was compared at different water depths and distances from wetland inflow. A sediment budget was also constructed from turbidity and suspended sediment data for comparison with marker horizons.

Schistosoma mansoni eggs were found in a latrine dated AD 1450-1550 in Montbéliard, France. This is the first record of intestinal schistosomiasis in archaeological material. Because the parasite has an African origin, its presence in Europe at that time may be due to African slaves.

This review examines controlled studies of the psychosocial adjustment of adult children of alcoholics (ACOAs) published since 1988. ACOAs appear at increased risk for a variety of negative outcomes, including substance abuse, antisocial or under-controlled behaviors, depressive symptoms, anxiety disorders, low self-esteem, difficulties in family relationships, and generalized distress and maladjustment. However, none of these outcomes are uniformly observed in ACOAs and none are specific to ACOAs.

Parallel findings in the adult children of alcoholics (ACOA) and child abuse literatures are integrated and extended by assessing long-term adjustment and childhood histories of parental alcoholism and sexual, physical, and emotional abuse in college students (N = 333). Abuse histories were most strongly related to adult symptom distress and social maladjustment. Parental alcoholism had no independent effects when controlling for abuse history.

Alcohol intoxication frequently contributes to the occurrence of traumatic brain injury. Few studies, however, have examined whether acute pre-injury alcohol intoxication or premorbid history of alcohol abuse exacerbate cognitive impairments that commonly result from traumatic brain injury. This study examined the influence of blood alcohol level at time of hospital admission on cognitive functioning during the post-acute stage of recovery from traumatic brain injury.
