The objective of the present work was extraction of polysaccharide from Senna tora L. seed and its characterization as a pharmaceutical excipient. Polysaccharide extraction was based on mechanical separation of the endosperm of seeds of Senna tora, water dissolution, centrifugation, and precipitation with acetone.

Gastro-retentive Captopril loaded alginate beads were prepared by an ionotropic gelation method using sodium alginate in combination with natural gums containing galactomannans (Senna tora seed gum, guar gum and locust bean gum) in the presence of calcium chloride. The process variables such as concentration of sodium alginate/natural polymer, concentration of calcium chloride, curing time, stirring speed and drying condition were optimized. Prepared beads were evaluated for various parameters such as flow property, drug content and entrapment efficiency, size and shape, and swelling index.

The objective of the present research work was to isolate, purify and characterize Cordia dichotoma gum and investigate its disintegration property in oral tablets. The isolated gum was tested for physicochemical characteristics such as solubility, pH (1% w/w in water), swelling index, loss on drying, ash value, bulk and tapped density, Carr's index, Hausner's ratio and angle of repose. The Orodispersible tablets of valsartan were prepared by direct compression method and evaluated for average weight (mg), drug content (%), thickness (mm), hardness (kg/cm(2)), friability (%), wetting time (sec), water absorption ratio (%) and disintegration time (sec).

Seed galactomannans are neutral, heterogeneous polysaccharides widely distributed in nature. The Mannose/Galactose ratios differ from gum to gum, resulting in a change in structure, which in turn, determines the various industrial applications of seed galactomannans. Senna tora (Family: Fabaceae) is a fast growing and spreading under shrub of which seeds, pods and leaves are extensively used for medicinal applications.

The aim of the present work was to develop a gastroretentive floating tablet of Atenolol and investigate the effects of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic retardant on in vitro release. Atenolol is an antihypertensive drug with an oral bioavailability of only 50% because of its poor absorption from lower gastrointestinal tract. The floating tablets of Atenolol were prepared to increase the gastric retention, to extend the drug release, and to improve the bioavailability of the drug.

Due to advances in drug delivery technology, currently, excipients are included in novel dosage forms to fulfil specific functions and in some cases they directly or indirectly influence the extent and/or rate of drug release and drug absorption. Recent trends towards use of plant based and natural products demand the replacement of synthetic additives with natural ones. Today, the whole world is increasingly interested in natural drugs and excipients.
