The professional identity of scientists has historically been cultivated to value research over teaching, which can undermine initiatives that aim to reform science education. Course-Based Research Experiences (CRE) and the inclusive Research and Education Communities (iREC) are two successful and impactful reform efforts that integrate research and teaching. The aim of this study is to explicate the professional identity of instructors who implement a CRE within an established iREC and to explore how this identity contributes to the success of these programs.

Accurate prediction of drug-drug interactions (DDI) from in vitro data is important, as it provides insights on clinical DDI risk and study design. Historically, the lower limit of plasma fraction unbound (f) is set at 1% for DDI prediction of highly bound compounds by the regulatory agencies due to the uncertainty of the f measurements. This leads to high false positive DDI predictions for highly bound compounds.

Accurate measurement of plasma protein binding (PPB) is of critical importance in drug discovery. Methodologies for PPB measurement continue to evolve to address the challenges of highly bound compounds. In order to generate high quality PPB data, it is crucial to not only apply state-of-the-art methods and highly sensitive and selective detectors, but also use high-quality plasma.

An exaggerated exercise pressor reflex and peripheral neuropathy are both evoked by the same type of thinly myelinated afferents and are present in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Although it is known that the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-1β (IL-1β) contributes to peripheral neuropathy, the effects of IL-1β on the exercise pressor reflex in T2DM are not known. Therefore, we aimed to determine the effect of IL-1 receptors on the exercise pressor reflex in T2DM.

Article Synopsis
  • Future climate changes will lead to more extreme weather, negatively affecting crop yields and quality, particularly due to heat stress, which is less understood for grain quality.
  • A study on safflower plants with different heat tolerances revealed that extreme heat reduced seed yield by 53-57% and altered fatty acid composition, with increases in saturated fatty acids and varying effects on unsaturated fatty acids over two years.
  • Heat stress impacted the physicochemical properties of safflower oil more significantly than the fatty acid profile, showing that certain parameters fluctuated based on environmental conditions and genetic tolerance.

This study investigates the production of lignin/silica hybrid nanoparticles (LSNPs) from rice husks, an abundant agricultural waste, and their capacity to stabilize Pickering emulsions for biocatalysis. Lignin extracted from rice husks under alkaline conditions was co-precipitated with silica to produce LSNPs in the presence or absence of ethanol as a co-solvent. Characterization of LSNPs revealed that ethanol played a key role in forming uniform, spherical nanoparticles and minimizing aggregation.
