Marine foundation species are increasingly impacted by anthropogenic stressors, driving a loss of diversity within these critical habitats. Prior studies suggest that species diversity within mussel beds has declined precipitously in southern California, USA, but it is unclear whether a similar loss has occurred farther north. Here, we resurvey a mussel bed community in northern California first sampled in 1941 to evaluate changes in diversity after 78 years.

Rationale: The complexation with dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a pivotal factor influencing transformations, transport, and bioavailability of mercury (Hg) in aquatic environments. However, identifying these complexes poses a significant challenge because of their low concentrations and the presence of coexisting ions.

Methods: In this study, mercury-dissolved organic matter (Hg-DOM) complexes were isolated through solid-phase extraction (SPE) from Hg-humic acid suspensions, and complexes were putatively identified using ultrahigh resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS).

This paper develops the methodological concept of river co-learning arenas (RCAs) and explores their potential to strengthen innovative grassroots river initiatives, enliven river commons, regenerate river ecologies, and foster greater socio-ecological justice. Pollution, damming, canalisation, and water grabbing are some examples of pressures threatening the entwined lifeworlds of human and non-human communities that depend on riverine systems.

The sex chromosomes contain complex, important genes impacting medical phenotypes, but differ from the autosomes in their ploidy and large repetitive regions. To enable technology developers along with research and clinical laboratories to evaluate variant detection on male sex chromosomes X and Y, we create a small variant benchmark set with 111,725 variants for the Genome in a Bottle HG002 reference material. We develop an active evaluation approach to demonstrate the benchmark set reliably identifies errors in challenging genomic regions and across short and long read callsets.

Background: Billions of dollars have been spent implementing regulations to reduce traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) from exhaust pipe emissions. However, few health studies have evaluated the change in TRAP emissions and associations with infant health outcomes. We hypothesize that the magnitude of association between vehicle exposure measures and adverse birth outcomes has decreased over time, parallelling regulatory improvements in exhaust pipe emissions.

This study reports the results of a targeted metabolomics-based profiling of secondary metabolism in an 18-strain panel of cultured axenically in multiple media conditions, in addition to an in planta infection assay involving four strains inoculated on two pea cultivars. Multiple secondary metabolites with known roles as virulence factors were detected which have not been previously associated with , including fungal decalin-containing diterpenoid pyrones (FDDPs), fusaoctaxins, sambutoxin and fusahexin, in addition to confirmation of previously reported secondary metabolites including enniatins, fusarins, chlamydosporols, JM-47 and others.

Objective: The Polycomb Repressive Complex 2 (PRC2) regulates neural stem cell behaviour during development of the cerebral cortex, yet how the loss of PRC2 developmentally influences cell identity in the mature brain is poorly defined. Using a mouse model in which the PRC2 gene Embryonic ectoderm development (Eed) was conditionally deleted from the developing mouse dorsal telencephalon, we performed single nuclei RNA sequencing (snRNA-seq) on the cortical plate of an adult heterozygote Eed knockout mouse and an adult homozygote Eed knockout mouse compared to a littermate control. This work was part of a larger effort to understand consequences of mutations to PRC2 within the mature brain.

The intersections of HIV with aging, incarceration, and racial disparities have been well studied, but little is known about the lived incarceration experiences of older African American persons living with HIV. This phenomenological study examined the fear of HIV disclosure among older African Americans living in Kentucky who have experienced incarceration. Based on the interviews analyzed, five main themes were identified: experiences with fear, experiences pertaining to confidentiality, experiences with disclosure, experiences with stigma, and the desire to be accepted.

Background: Exposure to high anticholinergic burden is associated with adverse outcomes in older adults. Older adults with frailty have greater vulnerability to adverse anticholinergic effects. Purpose: The NCI-MATCH trial assigned patients with solid tumors, lymphomas, or multiple myeloma to targeted therapies on the basis of identified genetic alterations from tumor biopsies.
