The timing of the annual phytoplankton spring bloom is likely to be altered in response to climate change. Quantifying that response has, however, been limited by the typically coarse temporal resolution (monthly) of global climate models. Here, we use higher resolution model output (maximum 5 days) to investigate how phytoplankton bloom timing changes in response to projected 21st century climate change, and how the temporal resolution of data influences the detection of long-term trends.

Microcapsules for high cell density culture of mammalian cells have found an increasing interest, however, the poor stability of the microcapsules and the lack of characterisation methods led to few quantitative results. Alginate-poly-L-lysine (PLL) microcapsules have been studied in detail in order to form a basis for comparison of capsules made from different polymers. Since the microcapsules can be easily retained in the bioreactor without the need for a cell separation device, high cell densities were achieved with a maximum of 4 × 10(7) cell/ml(microcapsules), corresponding to a colonisation of 5% of the internal capsule volume.

A prevalent type of protein misfolding causes the formation of β-sheet-rich structures known as amyloid fibrils. Research into the mechanisms of fibril formation has implications for both disease prevention and nanoscale templating technologies. This investigation into the aggregation of insulin utilises ion mobility mass spectrometry coupled with molecular modelling to identify and characterise oligomers formed during the 'lag' phase that precedes fibril growth.
