An intronic biallelic pentanucleotide expansion in RFC1 is the genetic cause of CANVAS. Several patients diagnosed with isolated "idiopathic" neurological or otological conditions might have a CANVAS spectrum disorder.

The Covid-19 pandemic has led to extensive testing by oropharyngeal swab. Although it is a relatively uncomplicated procedure, complications may occur. This is a case report of an 81-year-old male with a history of atrial flutter receiving anticoagulant therapy, who developed an oropharyngeal haematoma and subsequent infection following a test for SARS-CoV-2 by oropharyngeal swab.

We report the case of a patient admitted with aphasia, treated for a stroke. Subsequently, it was revealed that the symptoms were caused by complicated otitis media with localized meningitis. This case draws attention to the possible intracranial spread of infection when neurological symptoms occur in a patient with otitis media.
