Spontaneous peri-aortic hematoma in a patient with new-onset chest pain.

Peri-aortic hematoma formation is a common sequela of esophageal rupture and aortic dissection, but non-traumatic spontaneous hematoma formation is an uncommon finding. We present the case of a spontaneous peri-aortic hematoma in a 66-year-old male with associated left atrial thrombus. This 66-year-old male presented to a local emergency department with non-radiating epigastric and mid-sternal chest pain and was found to have a non-traumatic peri-aortic hematoma of unknown etiology that developed over a period of 12 hours.

Patient perspectives of the climate of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the emergency department.

Objective: Assessing the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) climate of emergency departments (EDs) can inform organizational change to provide equitable, inclusive, and high-quality care to their diverse patient populations. The purpose of this project was to investigate patient perspectives on the climate of DEI in an urban ED.

Methods: This was a cross-sectional survey study conducted in a large-volume, urban ED in Detroit, MI, from November 2018 to January 2019.

Derivation and validation of the ED-SAS score for very early prediction of mortality and morbidity with acute pancreatitis: a retrospective observational study.

Background: Existing scoring systems to predict mortality in acute pancreatitis may not be directly applicable to the emergency department (ED). The objective of this study was to derive and validate the ED-SAS, a simple scoring score using variables readily available in the ED to predict mortality in patients with acute pancreatitis.

Methods: This retrospective observational study was performed based on patient data collected from electronic health records across 2 independent health systems; 1 was used for the derivation cohort and the other for the validation cohort.
