Recent progress in additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, has offered several benefits, including high geometrical freedom and the ability to create bioinspired structures with intricate details. Mantis shrimp can scrape the shells of prey molluscs with its hammer-shaped stick, while beetles have highly adapted forewings that are lightweight, tough, and strong. This paper introduces a design approach for bioinspired lattice structures by mimicking the internal microstructures of a beetle's forewing, a mantis shrimp's shell, and a mantis shrimp's dactyl club, with improved mechanical properties.

Management of zygomatic fractures using different surgical approaches.

Management of zygomatic complex fractures using closed reduction, two point open reduction with internal fixation (ORIF), closed reduction with three point ORIF and two point ORIF is of interest to dentist. 150 patients with zygomatic bone fractures between the ages of 14-60 years were included in the study. At final assessment, the percentage of stable condition was greater in closed reduction + two point ORIF and closed reduction + three point ORIF when compared to two point ORIF alone and three point ORIF alone and closed reduction alone.

Genetic diversity and recent ancestry based on whole-genome sequencing of endangered Swedish cattle breeds.

Several indigenous cattle breeds in Sweden are endangered. Conservation of their genetic diversity and genomic characterization is a priority.Whole-genome sequences (WGS) with a mean coverage of 25X, ranging from 14 to 41X were obtained for 30 individuals of the breeds Fjällko, Fjällnära, Bohuskulla, Rödkulla, Ringamåla, and Väneko.

Lab-in-a-fiber-based integrated particle separation and counting.

An all-fiber integrated device capable of separating and counting particles is presented. A sequence of silica fiber capillaries with various diameters and longitudinal cavities are used to fabricate the component for size-based elasto-inertial passive separation of particles followed by detection in an uninterrupted continuous flow. Experimentally, fluorescent particles of 1 μm and 10 μm sizes are mixed in a visco-elastic fluid and fed into the all-fiber separation component.

The proliferation of the e-commerce market has posed challenges to staff safety, product quality, and operational efficiency, especially for cold chain logistics (CCL). Recently, the logistics of vaccine supply under the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic rearouses public attention and calls for innovative solutions to tackle the challenges remaining in CCL. Accordingly, this study proposes a cyber-physical platform framework applying the Internet of Everything (IoE) and Digital Twin (DT) technologies to promote information integration and provide smart services for different stakeholders in the CCL.

A machine learning approach to high-risk cardiac surgery risk scoring.

Introduction: In patients undergoing high-risk cardiac surgery, the uncertainty of outcome may complicate the decision process to intervene. To augment decision-making, a machine learning approach was used to determine weighted personalized factors contributing to mortality.

Methods: American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program was queried for cardiac surgery patients with predicted mortality ≥10% between 2012 and 2019.

Stimulated Brillouin scattering mitigation using optimized phase modulation waveforms in high power narrow linewidth Yb-doped fiber amplifiers.

We demonstrate the mitigation of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in a double-clad single mode Yb-doped optical fiber amplifier through external phase modulation of narrow linewidth laser radiation using optimized periodic waveforms from an arbitrary waveform generator. Such optimized phase modulation waveforms are obtained through a multi-objective Pareto optimization based on a comprehensive model for SBS in high power narrow linewidth fiber amplifiers using Brillouin parameters determined from controlled measurements. The ability of our approach to mitigate SBS is tested experimentally as a function of RMS linewidth of the modulated optical radiation, and we measure an enhancement in SBS threshold with respect to optical linewidth of ∼ 10 GHz.

Skeletal muscle transcriptome in healthy aging.

Age-associated changes in gene expression in skeletal muscle of healthy individuals reflect accumulation of damage and compensatory adaptations to preserve tissue integrity. To characterize these changes, RNA was extracted and sequenced from muscle biopsies collected from 53 healthy individuals (22-83 years old) of the GESTALT study of the National Institute on Aging-NIH. Expression levels of 57,205 protein-coding and non-coding RNAs were studied as a function of aging by linear and negative binomial regression models.

Anti-NMDAR-Positive Small-Cell Lung Cancer Paraneoplastic Limbic Encephalitis: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Introduction: Paraneoplastic limbic encephalitis (PLE) is a rare disease that presents as rapid onset dementia characterized by short-term memory loss (STM), anxiety, and behavioral changes. Anti-NMDAR antibodies are unfrequently reported in PLE associated with small-cell lung cancer (SCLC). Given that PLE can precede the diagnosis of cancer, it is very important that once infectious, metabolic, nutritional, or structural disorders associated with short-term memory loss are ruled out that vigorous effort must be made to rule out underlying malignancy.

Eosinophilic inflammation is a component of many atopic diseases such as asthma, and biologics targeting eosinophils have been shown to be effective in subsets of these patients. However, there also are conditions in which eosinophils are the key inflammatory cells responsible for driving tissue damage. In these eosinophilic diseases such as hyper-eosinophilic syndrome, eosinophilic esophagitis, and eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA), the development of biologics inhibiting eosinophilic inflammation have offered targeted therapeutic strategies for patients that have not responded well to typical first line drugs, which often have significant adverse side effects with poor disease modification or recurrent relapse with significant morbidity.

We assessed the extent to which chemotherapy cycles recorded in Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) Admitted Patient Care (APC) were captured in National Cancer Registration & Analysis Service Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT) for a cohort of lung cancer patients. All chemotherapy cycles recorded for linkage eligible lung cancer patients with a National Cancer Registration & Analysis Service diagnosis between 2012 and 2015 were identified in HES APC and SACT. Among a population of 4070 lung cancer patients, 6076 chemotherapy cycles were observed in HES APC data.

Suspected cancer symptoms and blood test results in primary care before a diagnosis of lung cancer: a case-control study.

To compare symptoms and blood test results prior to cancer diagnosis in individuals who developed lung cancer and those who did not. Nested case-control study, lung cancer patients were matched to up four controls with no record of cancer. Investigation of temporal dynamics due to stimulated Brillouin scattering using statistical correlation in a narrow-linewidth cw high power fiber amplifier.

We experimentally investigate the dynamics of backscattered light due to stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in a narrow-linewidth continuous wave (CW) fiber amplifier. We observe the onset of sharp intensity variations in the backscattered radiation as we increase the pump power, which when analyzed using Karl-Pearson's correlation coefficient reveals a distinct structure. We find that such structure is associated with the onset of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in the fiber amplifier.
