About one-third of individuals with diabetes develop diabetic retinopathy (DR), with one-tenth experiencing vision-threatening conditions such as diabetic macular edema (DME) or proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). Current treatments only show recovery in 50% of cases, and the disease often remains asymptomatic. Therefore, novel early detection methods and new biomarkers are crucial.

Health-related quality of life and its association with disease activity/functional status in rheumatoid arthritis: A cross-sectional study from South India.

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease with chronic pain that gradually becomes incapacitating and negatively influences the health-related quality of life (HRQoL). This study estimates HRQoL in RA using the EuroQol five dimensions (EQ-5D) tool and its association with functional status and disease activity.

Methods: RA patients (n = 320) aged above 18 years, visiting outpatient clinic at a tertiary care multispecialty hospital in south India were the study participants.

Is COVID-19 severity associated with telomere length? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Telomere shortening, a marker of cellular aging, has been linked to hospitalization and the severity of COVID-19. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, the mean difference in telomere length between non-severe and severe COVID-19 individuals was pooled to determine the association between short telomeres and COVID-19 severity. Relevant studies were retrieved through searches conducted in PubMed-Medline, Scopus, EMBASE, Medrxiv, Biorxiv, EuroPMC, and SSRN databases up to November 2022.

Cost-effectiveness of janus kinase inhibitors for rheumatoid arthritis: A systematic review and meta-analysis of cost-utility studies.

Janus kinase inhibitors (JAK-i), a class of targeted synthetic disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (tDMARDs), are suggested as second or third-line therapies in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Objectives: Gallstone diseases impose a significant economic burden on the health care system; thus, determining cost-effective management for gallstones is essential. We aim to estimate the cost-effectiveness of cholecystectomy compared with conservative management in individuals with uncomplicated symptomatic gallstones or cholecystitis in India.

Methods: A decision-analytic Markov model was used to compare the costs and QALY of early laparoscopic cholecystectomy (ELC), delayed laparoscopic cholecystectomy (DLC), and conservative management (CM) in patients with symptomatic uncomplicated gallstone/cholecystitis from an Indian health system perspective.

TLR-induced secretion of novel cytokine IL-27 is defective in newly diagnosed type-2 diabetic subjects.

Toll-like receptors (TLRs), the innate immune receptors, act as sentinels bridging both innate and adaptive arms of immunity. In the present study, we estimated TLR-induced secretion of IL-27, IL-12, IL-23, IL-8, IP-10, IL-17, IL-6 and TNF-α (by ELISA) and expression of Human Leukocyte Antigen- (Human Leukocyte Antigen - antigen D Related (HLA-DR), CD69, CD80 (also known asB7-1) (by flowcytometry) and Activating Transcription Factor 3(ATF3) (by qRT-PCR) in whole blood cultures of control and type-2 diabetic (both newly diagnosed/NDD and known/KDM) subjects. Globally, noncommunicable chronic diseases such as Type-2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) are posing a major threat to the world. T2DM is known to potentiate CAD which had led to the coining of a new clinical entity named diabetic CAD (DM-CAD), leading to excessive morbidity and mortality. The synergistic interaction between these two comorbidities is through sterile inflammation which is now being addressed as metabolic inflammation or metainflammation, which plays a pivotal role during both early and late stages of T2DM and also serves as a link between T2DM and CAD.

Impaired toll-like receptor signalling in peripheral B cells from newly diagnosed type-2 diabetic subjects.
