Article Synopsis
  • Severe primary insulin-like growth factor-I deficiency (SPIGFD) is a rare disorder that leads to short stature in children due to low IGF-1 levels, and it may often go undiagnosed.* -
  • A study was conducted at a pediatric care center using an electronic medical record (EMR) algorithm to find children with short stature and low IGF-1 levels, identifying 30 potential cases of SPIGFD.* -
  • Ultimately, none of these identified patients had SPIGFD, demonstrating that the EMR algorithm can help identify children who might benefit from treatment and can be applied to other rare diseases.*

In mid-December 1846, British and Irish newspapers reported the news of surgical etherization far more extensively than previously described. Reports about etherization had appeared at least 20 British and Irish newspapers in the days before Robert Liston's first operations under etherization on December 21, 1846. These reports were based on four separate accounts, 2 of which could be traced to New York, and 1 account had been published in a Parisian newspaper Galignani's Messenger on December 9, 1846.

Background: Among youth, symptoms of depression, anxiety, and alcohol use are associated with considerable illness and disability. Youth face many personal and health system barriers in accessing mental health care. Mobile applications (apps) offer youth potentially accessible, scalable, and anonymous therapy and other support.

On 7 September 1847, in Melbourne in the Port Phillip District of the Colony of New South Wales, David John Thomas (1813-1871) presented a paper, 'On the inhalation of the vapour of Æther, with cases', at an ordinary monthly meeting of the Port Phillip Medical Association. This is the earliest known presentation of a paper on etherisation in Australia. The partial publication of the manuscript in October 1847 in the may have led to it being returned to Thomas in Melbourne.

Uterine inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms of uncertain malignant potential. Aside from the recently described risk stratification score, which has not been validated by other studies, and rare reports of aberrant p16 expression in malignant tumors, there are no criteria to reliably predict behavior. Herein, we evaluated the clinicopathologic features and p16 expression patterns in 30 IMTs, with genomic profiling performed in a subset (13 malignant, 3 benign).

On December 19, 1846, at the London home of Francis Boott, dentist James Robinson administered the vapor of diethyl ether to a young female patient named Miss Lonsdale. This was the earliest known attempt in England to provide painless operating conditions for a dental extraction, and it was successful. Many authors have since written much about Boott and Robinson, but scarcely anything is known about Miss Lonsdale.

Article Synopsis
  • Ovarian steroid tumors (SCT) and Leydig cell tumors (LCT) are rare but can exhibit aggressive behavior, especially in about one-third of SCT cases.
  • In a study involving 25 tumors, atypical features like large size and necrosis were common, with recurrences and deaths occurring in some patients, mainly in those with malignant SCT.
  • Genetic analysis showed that malignant SCTs had unique genomic changes, while most tumors, even when exhibiting atypical features, typically followed a benign course, highlighting the need for more research on genetic markers for targeted treatment.

Purpose: To study the clinical outcomes, time span of healing of various ocular surface disorders with amniotic membrane graft.

Methods: A total of 41 patients, presenting to cornea clinic were included in the study and divided into five groups depending on the type of diagnosis: Group 1, with either >2 weeks of Persistent epithelial defect following cataract/retinal/glaucoma surgeries or Shield ulcers, Group 2 with >4 weeks of Non healing corneal ulcers, Group 3 with chemical injuries, Group 4 with Epithelial defects following keratoplasty, and Group 5 is the miscellaneous group.

Results: The mean age of the study subjects was 50.

Background: Depressive symptoms and alcohol use in youth doubled in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 pandemic has created sustained disruption in society, schools, and universities, including increasing poverty and discrimination. Public health restrictions have caused isolation and reduced social and emotional support.

Subclonal loss of mismatch repair (MMR) proteins has been described in a small subset of endometrial carcinomas (ECs), but the genomic basis for this phenomenon has received limited attention. Herein, we retrospectively evaluated all ECs with MMR immunohistochemistry (n=285) for subclonal loss, and in those (n=6), performed a detailed clinicopathologic and genomic comparison of the MMR-deficient and MMR-proficient components. Three tumors were FIGO stage IA, and one each stage IB, II, and IIIC2.

An anonymous poem and a cartoon about etherisation were published in on 26 June 1847, less than 3 weeks after ether was first administered in Sydney, New South Wales. Almost a year later, an Adelaide newspaper, , reproduced a poem about chloroform from the British satirical magazine . This poem, 'The Blessings of Chloroform', has been attributed to Percival Leigh, a British medical practitioner who became a comic writer.

Despite the remarkable success of SARS-CoV-2 vaccines, the rise of variants, some of which are more resistant to the effects of vaccination, highlights the potential need for additional COVID-19 vaccines. We used the Multiple Antigen-Presenting System (MAPS) technology, in which proteins are presented on a polysaccharide polymer to induce antibody, Th1, Th17 and CD8+ T cell responses, to engineer a novel vaccine targeting SARS-CoV-2. This vaccine contains a fragment of the spike (S) protein receptor-binding domain (RBD) sequence of the original D614G strain and was used to immunize nonhuman primates (NHP) for assessment of immunological responses and protection against SARS-CoV-2 challenge.

The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted the lives and well-being of long-term care home residents. This mixed-method study examined the health equity implications of the COVID-19 lockdown and visitation strategies in long-term care homes in Ontario. We recruited long-term care home residents, their family members and designated caregivers, as well as healthcare workers from 235 homes in Ontario, Canada.

Multi-principal element alloys represent a new paradigm in structural alloy design with superior mechanical properties and promising ballistic performance. Here, the mechanical response of AlCoCrFeNi alloy, with unique bimodal microstructure, was evaluated at quasistatic, dynamic, and ballistic strain rates. The microstructure after quasistatic deformation was dominated by highly deformed grains.

Objective: To characterize longitudinal changes in blood biomarkers, leukocyte composition, and gene expression following laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG).

Background: LSG is an effective treatment for obesity, leading to sustainable weight loss and improvements in obesity-related comorbidities and inflammatory profiles. However, the effects of LSG on immune function and metabolism remain uncertain.

John Davies Thomas (1844-1893) described a two-ounce drop-bottle for chloroform in 1872 while he was a resident medical officer at University College Hospital, London. After working as a ship's surgeon, he settled in Australia. In May 1875, Thomas presented a paper on the mortality from ether and chloroform at a meeting of the Medical Society of Victoria in Melbourne, Victoria.

A subset of renal cell carcinomas harbor gene fusions, and we report the first case of an EZR-ROS1 fusion in renal cell carcinoma. A 47-year-old female presented with hematuria and a mass involving the renal pelvis. Renal biopsy revealed a tumor with solid and tubular architecture that was diffusely positive for PAX8, CK7, and vimentin; retained expression of INI1; focally positive for P504S; and negative for GATA3 and TFE3.
