Laparoscopic common bile duct exploration (LCBDE) and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) are two methods of retrieving common bile duct (CBD) stones. Aspects of CBD stone management, such as sphincterotomy, have been implicated as risks for CBD stone recurrence although evidence is weak. The aim of this study was to compare stone recurrence following LCBDE and/or ERCP.

Genetic variations in dengue virus (DENV) play a distinct role in epidemic emergence. The DENV 3' UTR has become a recent interest in research. The objective of the study was to examine the genetic variation in the domain II, 3' UTR region of human and mosquito-derived DENV.

infective endocarditis arising from chronic rectal prolapse in the setting of spinal cord injury.

A 45-year-old man had recurrent presentations with pleuritic chest pain and shortness of breath. Four months prior, he had developed cauda equina syndrome from a spinal epidural abscess in the setting of intravenous drug use, complicated by lasting neurological deficits and a rectal prolapse. On his final presentation, blood cultures taken in the absence of antibiotics grew from multiple sets.

Modeling the relative role of human mobility, land-use and climate factors on dengue outbreak emergence in Sri Lanka.

Background: More than 80,000 dengue cases including 215 deaths were reported nationally in less than 7 months between 2016 and 2017, a fourfold increase in the number of reported cases compared to the average number over 2010-2016. The region of Negombo, located in the Western province, experienced the greatest number of dengue cases in the country and is the focus area of our study, where we aim to capture the spatial-temporal dynamics of dengue transmission.

Methods: We present a statistical modeling framework to evaluate the spatial-temporal dynamics of the 2016-2017 dengue outbreak in the Negombo region of Sri Lanka as a function of human mobility, land-use, and climate patterns.

Disciplining in Sri Lankan Schools: A Cross-Sectional Study.

An integral part of a teacher's job is to correct misbehavior of students. There is scarcity of information on disciplinary methods used by teachers in schools in Sri Lanka. As a part of a larger research, this study was undertaken to fill this gap.

Gillespie syndrome in a South Asian child: a case report with confirmation of a heterozygous mutation of the ITPR1 gene and review of the clinical and molecular features.

Background: Gillespie syndrome is a rare, congenital, neurological disorder characterized by the association of partial bilateral aniridia, non-progressive cerebellar ataxia and intellectual disability. Homozygous and heterozygous pathogenic variants of the ITPR1 gene encoding an inositol 1, 4, 5- triphosphate- responsive calcium channel have been identified in 13 patients recently. There have been 22 cases reported in the literature by 2016, mostly from the western hemisphere with none reported from Sri Lanka.

The use of child soldiers in war with special reference to Sri Lanka.

Throughout history, the involvement of children in military operations has been extensively documented. The issue of child conscription is multi-faceted, with very few medical but more sociological aspects, including terrorism, politics, economics, history, culture and religion amongst other factors. Many United Nations Instruments as well as the International Criminal Court have documented that child conscription is detrimental to a child's development, violates Child Rights, and is a war crime.

Design: Descriptive study.

Setting: Galle district in Sri Lanka.

Long term survival in subacute sclerosing panencephalitis.

A case of subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) with a long survival of 8 years is reported. Long term survival in SSPE has not been previously reported from Sri Lanka.

Wilms tumour associated with unilateral dysplasia of the iris.

We report a case of Wilms tumour associated with unilateral partial aniridia. Although Wilms tumour is known to be associated with bilateral aniridia, there is only one previously reported case associated with dysplasia of the iris.

Acute liver failure in a patient with hepatitis A infection on sodium valproate therapy.

An epileptic patient on sodium valproate therapy, who developed acute liver failure following acute hepatitis A infection is reported. The hepatotoxic effects of this drug, and the possibility of intercurrent infection precipitating the toxic effects are discussed.

Norrie's disease in an Asian family.

Norrie's disease, a congenital progressive oculo-acoustico-cerebral degenerative condition, is a sex linked recessive disorder. Previously described as atrophia oculi congeneti, it is associated with bilateral pseudotumour of the retina, lens, and corneal opacities, and phthisis bulbi. Some patients develop progressive deterioration of mental function and hearing.
