To characterize homing receptors that are responsible for the recognition and specific binding of hemopoietic progenitor cells to the stroma, we synthesized and 125I-labeled a number of neoglycoproteins. We used these neoglycoproteins as ligand to detect receptors on the membrane of two cloned murine hemopoietic progenitor cell lines, B6SUT and FDCP-1. Both cell lines demonstrated membrane receptors with galactosyl and mannosyl, but not fucosyl, specificities.

Tritium-labelled prostaglandin D2 (PGD2) was administered to normal volunteers by either intravenous infusion or inhalation in order to establish which metabolites of PGD2 are initially found in human plasma. Inhaled PGD2 was rapidly absorbed from the airways, as indicated by the rapid appearance of tritium in the plasma. Metabolites chromatographically similar to 9 alpha,11 beta-PGF2 and 13,14-dihydro-15-keto-9 alpha,11 beta-PGF2 were found after both routes of administration.

A method is presented for acquiring magnetic resonance (MR) images in parallel from both members of a pair of organs, such as the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), with use of two surface coil receivers. Interleaved sagittal sections are broken into two groups, one on each side of the head, and the MR receiver is toggled between the two coils. The surface coil that is not receiving at a given time is decoupled from the other surface coil by the active gating of a diode blocking network located across the coil input.

Prostacyclin (PGI2) is generated in appreciable amounts during allergic reactions in human lung tissue. To define its activity on human airways we have studied the effects of doubling concentrations of inhaled PGI2 and its hydrolysis product 6-oxoprostaglandin F1 alpha (6-oxo-PGF1 alpha) on specific airway conductance (sGaw), maximum expiratory flow at 30% vital capacity (Vmax30), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), and static lung volumes in subjects with mild allergic asthma. In a second study the effect of inhaled PGI2 on bronchoconstriction provoked by increasing concentrations of inhaled prostaglandin (PG) D2 and methacholine was observed.

The cell membrane of a cloned murine bone marrow stromal cell line D2XRII was extracted in situ using Triton X-100 detergent and the cytoskeletal structure studied during the process of adherence and spreading. During this process, three zones can be identified in the cytoplasm: the perinuclear zone, which was the fixed part of the cell; the peripheral mixed filamentous zone, which formed the core of long cytoplasmic projections; and an outer zone, which formed the boundary of cytoplasmic projections and contained only intermediate filaments. The process of spreading appeared to originate from very long strips of microfilaments emanating from the second zone, crossing the width of the outer zone, and extending beyond for a long distance.

Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) induces a range of hemopoietic alterations in its murine host including progressive anemia, thrombocytopenia, splenomegaly, neutrophilia, and marrow and splenic myeloid hyperplasia. Concentrations of both pluripotent and committed marrow hemopoietic progenitors is increased and the cycling fraction of granulocyte-macrophage progenitors is accelerated. We have developed a way to study whether these hemopoietic effects become long-term consequences of cancer, using LLC-bearing mice with advanced tumor treated with the antineoplastic agent tiazofurin, 2-beta-D-ribofuranosyl-thiazole-4-carboxyamide, NSC 286193 (TZ).

The existing knowledge of the molecular mechanism that underlies the successful engraftment of hemopoietic progenitor cells in their specific stromal microenvironment has been discussed. It appears that membrane lectins on the surface of the stem cell with specificity for galactose with and/or mannose-bearing glycoconjugates on the surface of the stromal cell are involved. This recognition and binding of hemopoietic stem cells which is called "homing" initiates the processes of differentiation, proliferation, and maturation of hemopoietic cells.

This study was designed to determine if life stress is predictive of athletic injury among male and female participants in intercollegiate noncontact sports. The Athletic Life Experiences Survey (ALES) was administered to 86 athletes from the sports of baseball, softball, tennis, and track before the start of the season. The incidence, clinical features, histogenesis, and treatment of extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD) are reviewed. K/Na ratios have been determined in the leaves of salt-treated plants of 14 disomic substitution lines in which each of the D-genome chromosomes replaces the homoeologous A- or B-genome chromosome in the tetraploid wheat variety Langdon (AABB genome). Aneuploid lines of hexaploid bread wheat (cv Chinese Spring) having a reduced or an enhanced complement of chromosome 4D have also been examined. These investigations show that the gene(s) determining K/Na ratios in the leaves of wheat plants grown in the presence of salt is located on the long arm of chromosome 4D.

A pulse sequence is presented which uses Polarization Transfer by a Selective Homonuclear Technique (POTSHOT) to retain all resonances, in phase, from a selected coupled spin system while suppressing all other peaks, from both coupled and noncoupled spins. This technique, which is a selective form of Homonuclear Polarization Transfer (HPT), has been used in a 1.5-T whole-body system to generate edited 1H lactate spectra from lactate/oil phantoms and from excised dog hearts.

Peripheral administration of the dihydrocodeinone RX 336-M (6 mg/kg) stimulated vigorous "wet-dog" shakes and excessive grooming in young drug-naive rats. The effects of RX 336-M were greater in younger than in older animals of both sexes, and were greater in 39-day-old male rats than in female rats of the same age. In a second experiment, female rats were pretreated with testosterone benzoate (1 mg/kg/day) for 1 week prior to testing the effects of RX 336-M at 39 days of age.
