Can Self-Administered Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs) Help Rural India? An Evaluation of the CoviSelf Kit as a Response to the 2019-2022 COVID-19 Pandemic.

This paper evaluates India's first officially approved self-administered rapid antigen test kit against COVID-19, a device called CoviSelf. The context is rural India. Rapid antigen tests (RATs) are currently popular in situations where vaccination rates are low, where sections of the community remain unvaccinated, where the COVID-19 pandemic continues to grow and where easy or timely access to RTPCR (reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction) testing is not an option.

Breast gangrene in an HIV-positive patient.

Introduction: Breast gangrene has been reported as a complication following puerperal sepsis, breast surgery, nipple piercings, warfarin toxicity, etc. We report a case of primary breast gangrene in an HIV-positive individual which, to the best of our knowledge, is the first of its kind.

Cefoperazone-sulbactam for treatment of intra-abdominal infections: results from a randomized, parallel group study in India.

Background: Combinations of a third-generation cephalosporin and metronidazole, with or without an aminoglycoside, often are used for the treatment of intra-abdominal infections in surgical settings. Simpler regimens that preserve an adequate spectrum of coverage, but allow easier administration and have fewer side effects, may be a more desirable option.

Methods: This randomized, open-label, active comparator study evaluated the effectiveness (non-inferiority hypothesis) of the beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitor combination cefoperazone-sulbactam (2-8 g/day), compared with ceftazidime (2-6 g/day)-amikacin (15 mg/kg/day)-metronidazole (500 mg three times daily) in 154 and 152 subjects, respectively, having intra-abdominal infections.

Gastric cancer presenting with acute disseminated intravascular coagulation.

Patients presenting with acute disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) as the first symptom of malignancy are rare. A 68-year-old man presented with DIC. On evaluation, he was found to have adenocarcinoma of the stomach.

True aneurysm of the splenic artery is rare. Two cases of ruptured true splenic artery aneurysms are presented. The first patient was a 62-year-old female who presented within 6 hours of the onset of symptoms.

Unusual "floating balls" appearance of an ovarian cystic teratoma: sonographic and CT findings.

Ovarian cystic teratomas are cystic fatty tumors that can be easily diagnosed by sonography and CT. We present a case of ovarian cystic teratoma with an unusual sonographic appearance of mobile, hyperechoic, intracystic fat balls; this finding correlated well with the appearance on CT.

Malrotation of the gut manifested during pregnancy.

The diagnosis of intestinal obstruction during pregnancy poses problems, as vomiting which is an important symptom of the obstruction can be attributed to hyperemesis of pregnancy and radiological investigation are avoided during this period. A case of intestinal obstruction due to volvulus resulting from congenital malrotation of the gut is reported here. The patient first presented during pregnancy.

Gastric carcinoma presenting as solitary cutaneous metastasis.

We report a patient with gastric adenocarcinoma presenting with a cauliflower-like large papillomatous cutaneous metastases on the nape of the neck.

Duodenal obstruction due to appendicular abscess (a case report).

The obstruction to the third part of duodenum due to appendicular abscess is reported here. The abscess had tracked behind the mesocolon and obstructed the duodenum. The case was treated by drainage of abscess and anterior gastrojejunostomy.
