Purpose: Continuous video electroencephalography (cEEG) monitoring is the recommended gold standard of care for at-risk neonates but is not available in many Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs). To conduct a randomized treatment trial of levetiracetam for the first-line treatment of neonatal seizures (the NEOLEV2 trial), we developed a monitoring infrastructure at five NICUs, implementing recent technological advancements to provide continuous video EEG monitoring and real-time response to seizure detection. Objective: To determine whether monitoring cerebral oxygen tissue saturation (StO) with near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and brain activity with amplitude-integrated electroencephalography (aEEG) can predict infants at risk for intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) and death in the first 72 hours of life.

Study Design: A NIRS sensor and electroencephalography leads were placed on 127 newborns <32 weeks of gestational age at birth. Ten minutes of continuous NIRS and aEEG along with heart rate, peripheral arterial oxygen saturation, fraction of inspired oxygen, and mean airway pressure measurements were obtained in the delivery room.

Objective: To compare the effect of umbilical cord milking vs delayed cord clamping (DCC) on neurodevelopmental and health outcomes in very preterm infants at 22-26 months of corrected age.

Study Design: Neurodevelopmental outcomes at 2 years of age were assessed using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development, third edition, and a standardized neurologic examination. Data regarding pulmonary morbidities, neurosensory impairments, and hospitalizations were obtained by parental interview.

Galloway-Mowat syndrome is a rare autosomal-recessive disorder classically described as the combination of microcephaly and nephrotic syndrome. Recently, homozygous truncating mutations in WDR73 (WD repeat domain 73) were described in two of 31 unrelated families with Galloway-Mowat syndrome which was followed by a report of two sibs in an Egyptian consanguineous family. In this report, seven affecteds from four families showing biallelic missense mutations in WDR73 were identified by exome sequencing and confirmed to follow a recessive model of inheritance.

Visual field deficits can be a consequence of brain tumor location or treatment. The prevalence of unrecognized visual field deficits in children diagnosed with brain tumors is not known. All children at a single tertiary care pediatric children's hospital diagnosed with a primary brain tumor were tested for visual field deficits by a child neurologist and neuro-ophthalmologist over 16 months.

Within a single-center prospective cohort study of neonatal encephalopathy involving 315 subjects, 15 neonates were found to have a focal stroke on magnetic resonance imaging. These 15 patients were matched on the basis of gender and degree of encephalopathy to 30 neonates without stroke from the same cohort. We have optimized a flow cytometric DNA alkaline unwinding assay to increase the sensitivity in detecting low levels of DNA damage (strand breaks and alkali-labile sites) and to permit the measurement of the extent of DNA damage within each cell cycle compartment. The lowest gamma radiation dose that induced detectable DNA damage in each cell cycle phase of HeLa and CEM cells was 10 cGy. The lowest H(2)O(2) concentration that induced detectable DNA damage in each cell cycle phase was 0.
