Purpose: To report the clinical characteristics of 13 cases of noninfectious corneal ulceration related to lacrimal drainage pathway disease.

Methods: Medical records of 13 patients with lacrimal drainage pathway disease-associated keratopathy who were examined at Ehime University Hospital between April 2007 and December 2021 were analyzed.

Results: The predisposing lacrimal drainage pathway diseases for corneal ulceration were chronic dacryocystitis in seven patients and lacrimal canaliculitis in six patients.

Background And Objective: A cytokine storm is caused by inflammatory cells, including pro-inflammatory macrophage phenotype (M1), and play a critical role in the pathogenesis of COVID-19, in which diffuse alveolar damage occurs in the lungs due to oxidative stress exposure. Heme oxygenase (HO)-1 is a stress-induced protein produced by the anti-inflammatory / anti-oxidative macrophage phenotype (M2), which also produces soluble CD163 (sCD163). In our study, we investigated and determined that serum HO-1 can be a predictive biomarker for assessing both the severity and the outcome of COVID-19 patients.

T helper 17 (Th17) cells express CC chemokine receptor 4 (CCR4) and secrete cytokines such as interleukin-17A (IL-17A) and granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), while dendritic cells (DCs) produce CC chemokine ligand 22 (CCL22), a CCR4 ligand, upon stimulation with GM-CSF. Th17 cells are known to play a critical role in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). CCL22 has also been shown to be up-regulated in the synovial tissues of RA patients.

Small fibre neuropathy (SFN) is an initial pathology of diabetic polyneuropathy (DPN). Serum lipopolysaccharide binding protein levels are positively correlated with the pain threshold in the foot, suggesting that the abundance of gut Gram-negative bacilli, which are a source of lipopolysaccharides, may be involved in the development of DPN. Furthermore, the abundance of the gut and oral microbiota is assumed to be involved in the pathogenesis of diabetes.

Three young adult cats with intermittent spinal hyperesthesia and paraparesis and diagnosed with spinal epidural arteriovenous fistula are described. In all 3 cases, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed focal dilatation of the veins in the epidural space of the thoracic spinal cord, whereas computed tomography angiography (CTA) showed dilatation and enhancement from the intercostal vein to the azygos vein at the same site in the arterial phase. Dorsal laminectomy and occlusion of the interarcuate branches running across the dorsal aspect of the spinal cord were performed in all 3 cats to decompress the spinal cord, which resulted in a remission of clinical signs and no recurrence during 14 to 40 months of follow-up after surgery in all cases.

Screws coated with fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF-2)-calcium phosphate (CP) composite layers exhibit enhanced soft tissue and bone formation and angiogenesis because of the biological activity of FGF-2. Furthermore, the mitogenic activity of the FGF-2 within the composite layers remains unchanged after gamma-ray sterilization, which may improve the storage stability prior to clinical use. Protein kinase A (PKA) directly phosphorylates aquaporin-2 (AQP2) water channels in renal collecting ducts to reabsorb water from urine for the maintenance of systemic water homeostasis. More than 50 functionally distinct PKA-anchoring proteins (AKAPs) respectively create compartmentalized PKA signaling to determine the substrate specificity of PKA. This study aims to identify natural compounds that could affect the fusion between the viral membrane (receptor-binding domain of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 spike protein) and the human cell receptor angiotensin-converting enzyme 2.
