Article Synopsis
  • * BPD may develop due to unusual repair responses from lung injuries that happen either before or after birth, with intrauterine inflammation identified as a key risk factor for these injuries and their connection to BPD.
  • * The review explores research on how intrauterine inflammation impacts lung development, particularly the formation of alveoli and blood vessels, while also considering prenatal treatment strategies aimed at reducing this inflammation to prevent or manage BPD.

Article Synopsis
  • Gout attacks can be seen as events where crystal formation occurs; crystallization inhibitors like carboxyl and hydroxyl groups can help prevent this.
  • L-lactic acid (LA) has historically been thought to trigger gout by raising uric acid levels, but recent findings show it might actually suppress crystal formation at higher concentrations before promoting it.
  • The study introduces a new mechanism called "tailored-made occupancy (TMO)" to better understand how LA influences the formation and growth of gout-related crystals.

The core to the treatment of gout is the elimination of pathologic crystal, monosodium urate monohydrate (MSUM). The primary treatment available is to gradually dissolve the "culprit crystals" by lowering the blood uric acid concentration with medications, which often takes a long time and in severe cases must still be treated surgically. Herein, we developed a dynamic bionic platform based on a hydrogel composite membrane (HCM) to screen the direct facilitated solubilization of MSUM crystals by small organic molecules in bionic saturated, or even supersaturated, solutions.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the global prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) infection in adults and children/adolescents, linking it to gastric cancer rates.
  • After reviewing nearly 17,000 articles, researchers found that H pylori infection prevalence dropped from 52.6% to 43.9% in adults but remained at 35.1% in children and adolescents from 2015 to 2022.
  • The decline in H pylori in adults was significant in certain regions, while the relationship between H pylori prevalence and decreasing gastric cancer incidence prompts the need for further large-scale clinical trials to confirm these findings.

Background: Middle lobe syndrome (MLS) is a complication of childhood asthma. This study aimed to compare the clinical features and lung function between asthmatic children with recurrent MLS and transient right middle lobe (RML) and/or lingula atelectasis.

Methods: This study retrospectively analyzed asthmatic children with RML and/or lingula atelectasis between 2010 and 2020 using data from the pediatric pulmonary department.

Background And Objective: There remains controversy regarding vitamin D deficiency and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in very low birth weight (VLBW) and extremely low birth weight (ELBW) preterm infants. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency assessed by umbilical cord blood 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] in preterm infants in northeast China and to evaluate the ability and optimal threshold of 25(OH)D for predicting BPD.

Methods: The clinical data of VLBW and ELBW preterm infants with known cord-blood 25(OH)D levels were analyzed retrospectively.
