Purpose: This study surveyed the current practice of surgical treatment of obstructive left-sided colon cancer (OLCC) in China.

Methods: All colorectal surgery departments at tertiary or secondary hospitals in China were invited to complete a web-based questionnaire between August 27 and September 2, 2020.

Results: Overall, completed questionnaire were received from 357 hospitals.

We present a consistency condition for 8D N=1 supergravity theories with nontrivial global structure G/Z for the non-Abelian gauge group, based on an anomaly involving the Z 1-form center symmetry. The interplay with other swampland criteria identifies the majority of 8D theories with gauge group G/Z, which have no string theory realization, as inconsistent quantum theories when coupled to gravity. While this condition is equivalent to geometric properties of elliptic K3 surfaces in F-theory compactifications, it constrains the unexplored landscape of gauge groups in other 8D string models.

Considering the inferior mechanical properties of the current bioresorbable polymers, a novel bioresorbable magnesium-reinforced polylactide (PLA) membrane was designed for the application in critical defect sites in guided bone/tissue regeneration. The PLA-FAZ91 membrane was fabricated by combining two PLA membranes with a fluoride-coated AZ91 (9 wt% Al, 1 wt% Zn) (FAZ91) magnesium alloy core by hot pressing. A combined double-layered PLA membrane was used as the control group.

The aim of this study was to fabricate bioresorbable polylactide (PLA) membranes by 3D printing and compare their properties to those of the membranes fabricated by the conventional method and compare the effect of different pore sizes on the properties of the 3D-printed membranes. PLA membranes with three different pore sizes (large pore-479 μm, small pore-273 μm, and no pore) were 3D printed, and membranes fabricated using the conventional solvent casting method were used as the control group. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and micro-computed tomography (µ-CT) were taken to observe the morphology and obtain the porosity of the four groups.

Background: Interactions between the endothelium and infected erythrocytes play a major role in the pathogenesis of falciparum malaria, with microvascular dysfunction and parasite sequestration associated with worsening outcomes. The glycocalyx is a carbohydrate-rich layer that lines the endothelium, with multiple roles in vascular homeostasis. The role of the glycocalyx in falciparum malaria and the association with disease severity has not been investigated.

Upregulated expression of the CXC chemokine receptor type 7 (CXCR7) promotes breast, lung and prostate cancer progression and metastasis. However, the role of CXCR7 in colon cancer has not been determined. We hypothesized that increased CXCR7 expression may contribute to human colon cancer occurrence and progression.

Although cisplatin has been shown to induce both apoptosis and necrosis in cancer cells, the potential interconnections between these modes of cell death induced by the drug remain unknown. We studied this phenomenon in gastric cancer cell lines and identified one cell line (SGC-7901) that underwent apoptosis, and another cell line (BGC-823) that primarily underwent nonapoptotic cell death, in response to cisplatin. Apoptosis in cisplatin-treated SGC-7901 cells seemed to be caspase dependent and was mediated, at least in part, by the BH3-only protein, Noxa.
