Study Question: Does ovarian ferroptosis play an active role in the development of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)?

Summary Answer: Increased ovarian ferroptosis was present in PCOS ovaries and the inhibition of ferroptosis with ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1) ameliorated polycystic ovary morphology and anovulation.

What Is Known Already: Programmed cell death plays a fundamental role in ovarian follicle development. However, the types and mechanisms of cell death involved in the ovary are yet to be elucidated.

Speech recognition becomes increasingly important in the modern society, especially for human-machine interactions, but its deployment is still severely thwarted by the struggle of machines to recognize voiced commands in challenging real-life settings: oftentimes, ambient noise drowns the acoustic sound signals, and walls, face masks or other obstacles hide the mouth motion from optical sensors. To address these formidable challenges, an experimental prototype of a microwave speech recognizer empowered by programmable metasurface is presented here that can remotely recognize human voice commands and speaker identities even in noisy environments and if the speaker's mouth is hidden behind a wall or face mask. The programmable metasurface is the pivotal hardware ingredient of the system because its large aperture and huge number of degrees of freedom allows the system to perform a complex sequence of sensing tasks, orchestrated by artificial-intelligence tools.

Objective: To determine whether the peak serum estradiol (E2) level during ovarian stimulation affects the cumulative live birth rate (CLBR) and obstetric outcomes in freeze-all cycles.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study involved patients who underwent their first cycle of fertilization followed by a freeze-all strategy and frozen embryo transfer cycles between January 2014 and June 2019 at a tertiary care center. Patients were categorized into four groups according to quartiles of peak serum E2 levels during ovarian stimulation (Q1-Q4).

Intelligent indoor robotics is expected to rapidly gain importance in crucial areas of our modern society such as at-home health care and factories. Yet, existing mobile robots are limited in their ability to perceive and respond to dynamically evolving complex indoor environments because of their inherently limited sensing and computing resources that are, moreover, traded off against their cruise time and payload. To address these formidable challenges, here we propose intelligent indoor metasurface robotics (I2MR), where all sensing and computing are relegated to a centralized robotic brain endowed with microwave perception; and I2MR's limbs (motorized vehicles, airborne drones, etc.

Overweight, with an increasing prevalence worldwide, significantly impairs the clinical outcomes following in vitro fertilization (IVF). Hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, and metabolic disorders are always accompanied by the majority of overweight patients. The association between granulosa cell function and metabolic alterations in follicular fluid including lipids, proteins, and growth factors has been extensively documented.

Article Synopsis
  • * A total of 173 differentially expressed proteins were identified, including 63 novel proteins that changed in expression and 5 hub proteins critical for endometrial receptivity.
  • * The protein ACSL4 was highlighted as a key molecule, showing significant changes in expression related to progesterone and potentially influencing implantation success, making it a valuable target for future research into endometrial receptivity mechanisms.

Radiation-induced liver damage (RILD) is a spiny problem in radiotherapy or other circumstances that exposure to radiation. The need for radioprotective agent is increasing to protect liver tissue. This study aimed to explore the hepatoprotective effect of -coumaric acid (CA) against RILD.

Endometrial decidualization is a prerequisite for implantation, and impaired decidualization is associated with recurrent implantation failure (RIF). Coding genes of the HOX family have been clarified as critical regulators in endometrial decidualization, but the role of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in the HOX gene family has yet to be determined. The aim of this study was to clarify the possible roles of lncRNAs in the HOX gene family in decidualization.

Background: Insulin resistance (IR) contributes to ovarian dysfunctions in polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) patients. Serum amyloid A1 (SAA1) is an acute phase protein produced primarily by the liver in response to inflammation. In addition to its role in inflammation, SAA1 may participate in IR development in peripheral tissues.

Electromagnetic (EM) sensing is uniquely positioned among nondestructive examination options, which enables us to see clearly targets, even when they visually invisible, and thus has found many valuable applications in science, engineering and military. However, it is suffering from increasingly critical challenges from energy consumption, cost, efficiency, portability, etc., with the rapidly growing demands for the high-quality sensing with three-dimensional high-frame-rate schemes.

Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common metabolic and endocrine disorder among reproductive-age women, and the leading cause of anovulatory infertility. 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenases-1 (11β-HSD1) catalysing the conversion of inactive cortisone to active cortisol plays a crucial role in various metabolic diseases. However, whether 11β-HSD1 is associated with the pathogenesis of PCOS and whether 11β-HSD1 can be a treating target of PCOS remain unknown.

Decidualization is driven by differentiation of human endometrial stromal cells (ESCs), and is a prerequisite for successful implantation and establishment of pregnancy. The critical role of impaired decidualization in women suffered recurrent implantation failure (RIF) has been established, while the underlying mechanism is poorly understood. In the present study, we verified the essential role of Sirtuin1 (SIRT1) in regulating differentiation and maintaining reactive oxygen species (ROS) homeostasis of human ESCs during decidualization.

Electromagnetic (EM) sensing is a widespread contactless examination technique with applications in areas such as health care and the internet of things. Most conventional sensing systems lack intelligence, which not only results in expensive hardware and complicated computational algorithms but also poses important challenges for real-time sensing. To address this shortcoming, we propose the concept of intelligent sensing by designing a programmable metasurface for data-driven learnable data acquisition and integrating it into a data-driven learnable data-processing pipeline.

Conventional wireless communication architecture, a backbone of our modern society, relies on actively generated carrier signals to transfer information, leading to important challenges including limited spectral resources and energy consumption. Backscatter communication systems, on the other hand, modulate an antenna's impedance to encode information into already existing waves but suffer from low data rates and a lack of information security. Here, we introduce the concept of massive backscatter communication which modulates the propagation environment of stray ambient waves with a programmable metasurface.

Objective: Based on estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), human epidermal growth factor receptor (HER-2), and proliferation cell nuclear antigen (Ki-67) status, breast cancer (BC) can be divided into several molecular sub-types. The patterns of these biological receptors may change during the course of progression and metastasis which could lead to new treatment strategies accordingly.

Method: The present multi-center-based clinical data investigated the discordance patterns of molecular features in Chinese BC patients between primary tumors and distant metastasis.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder in reproductive-age women usually accompanied by lipid metabolic disorders. However, it remains unknown whether arachidonic acid (AA) and its metabolites in follicular fluid (FF) were altered in PCOS patients. This study was intended to measure the levels of AA and its metabolites in the FF of non-obese PCOS patients that underwent in vitro fertilization (IVF) and to explore the possible causes of the alterations.

There is an increasing need to remotely monitor people in daily life using radio-frequency probe signals. However, conventional systems can hardly be deployed in real-world settings since they typically require objects to either deliberately cooperate or carry a wireless active device or identification tag. To accomplish complicated successive tasks using a single device in real time, we propose the simultaneous use of a smart metasurface imager and recognizer, empowered by a network of artificial neural networks (ANNs) for adaptively controlling data flow.
