The present study describes some effects on frog olfactory mucosa following acute exposure to styrene and toluene, two organic solvents. The olfactory summed receptor potential (EOG) was recorded in order to monitor the functional effect. The olfactory epithelium was examined with transmission electron microscopy, using both thin section and freeze-fracture technique.

The fine structure of blood vessels with a diameter of less than 50 micrometers, i.e. small arterioles, capillaries and postcapillary venules were studied.

Twelve subjects (group A) trained for 6 weeks at heavy intensity, and six subjects (group B) trained for 12 weeks at moderate intensity. Maximal oxygen uptake increased by about 20% (P less than 0.

We have investigated the effects of nutritional state on the lipoprotein lipase activities of the experimentally hypothyroid rat. Both short-term effects (i.e.

Hepatic lipase activity in post-heparin plasma rose by 46 +/- 25% (p less than 0.025), whereas the activity of lipoprotein lipase did not change significantly.

Lipoprotein concentrations and activities of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) and hepatic lipase (HL) were measured in 70 subjects with thyroid function ranging from overt hypothyroidism over subclinical hypothyroidism and euthyroidism to hyperthyroidism. In parallel with serum T3 (S-T3) concentrations increasing from low in hypothyroidism to high in hyperthyroidism there were gradually higher HL activities over the full spectrum of thyroid function, accompanied by decreasing levels of total and low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. High density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol was lower (P less than 0.

The transport rate was similar in both directions and about 30 min/day at 18 degrees C. The transport was depressed by 2,4-DNP, low-temperature and vinblastine.

The patients were randomly assigned to one of three groups receiving either high frequency (100 Hz), low frequency (2 Hz) or placebo TENS. In the two groups receiving TENS (42 patients) 16 patients reported a reduction in pain intensity exceeding 50%; out of these 16 patients, 4 patients reported complete relief of pain.

The effects of ethanol, acetaldehyde, acetate and lactate on lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity and regulation have been investigated. None of the substances had any direct effect on the enzyme or enzyme-substrate complex. Ethanol and acetate interfered with LPL regulation studied in vitro using rat adipose tissue.

The effect of mechanical vibratory stimulation on the human tooth pain threshold has been studied in 4 healthy naïve subjects. Vibration at 10 and 100 Hz was applied to a maxillary incisor and the electrical pain threshold was measured in an adjacent tooth. During the conditioning stimulation the pain threshold increased 1.

The present paper describes the effect of vibratory stimulation on pain of dental origin in 36 patients. The patients were from a clinic for dental surgery and all had suffered pain from pulpal inflammation, apical periodontitis or postoperative pain following extraction of an impacted wisdom tooth for more than 2 days. Vibration at 100 Hz was applied to various points in the facial region or the skull.

In a two-lever testing chamber, rats had concurrent access to intravenous amphetamine and brain stimulation reinforcers. Responding for each reinforcer was generally increased above baseline rates taken when only one reinforcer was available. Amphetamine stereotypy was observed, but did not interfere with rapid lever-pressing for brain stimulation.
