The activation of the vitamin D receptor (VDR) in the ileum has been shown to regulate Paneth cell-specific defensins, a large family of antimicrobial peptides; hence, this may serve as a potential mechanism to maintain intestinal homeostasis. Previously, we have demonstrated that a combination of vitamin D (VD) and fructooligosaccharides (FOSs) upregulates colonic in mice. Here, we aim to examine the effect of VD, alone or in combination with FOSs, on intestinal barrier integrity and the secretion of antimicrobial peptides, as well as the gut microbial community.

Human-animal entanglements in bushmeat trading in Sierra Leone: An ethnographic assessment of a potential zoonotic interface.

'Bushmeat' markets are often portrayed as chaotic spaces where exotic wild animals are sold. They are hypothesized to be important sites for zoonotic disease transmission, given the prolonged and intense nature of the cross-species encounters that occur within them. Whilst such markets have received some attention from researchers, rich qualitative descriptions of everyday practices in these markets are rare.

Fluctibacter corallii gen. nov., sp. nov., isolated from the coral Montipora capitata on a reef in Kāne'ohe Bay, O'ahu, Hawai'i, reclassification of Aestuariibacter halophilus as Fluctibacter halophilus comb. nov., and Paraglaciecola oceanifecundans as a later heterotypic synonym of Paraglaciecola agarilytica.

Strain AA17 was isolated from an apparently healthy fragment of Montipora capitata coral from the reef surrounding Moku o Lo'e in Kāne'ohe Bay, O'ahu, Hawai'i, USA, and was taxonomically evaluated using a polyphasic approach. Comparison of a partial 16S rRNA gene sequence found that strain AA17 shared the greatest similarity with Aestuariibacter halophilus JC2043 (96.6%), and phylogenies based on 16S rRNA gene sequences grouped strain AA17 with members of the Aliiglaciecola, Aestuariibacter, Lacimicrobium, Marisediminitalea, Planctobacterium, and Saliniradius genera.

We hypothesized that neuraxial anesthesia (NA) would provide favorable mental health profiles compared with GA after THA.

Genetically encoded fluorescent calcium indicators have revolutionized neuroscience and other biological fields by allowing cellular-resolution recording of physiology during behavior. However, we currently lack bright, genetically targetable indicators in the near infrared that can be used in animals. Here, we describe WHaloCaMP, a modular chemigenetic calcium indicator built from bright dye-ligands and protein sensor domains that can be genetically targeted to specific cell populations.

Background: Physical exercise aids glycemic control and the prevention of diabetes-related complications. However, exercise beyond an individual's pulmonary functional capacity may be detrimental. To date, little is known about the relationship between pulmonary function and exercise capacity in people with type 2 diabetes (T2D).

Predicting 5-Year Clinical Outcomes After Transcatheter or Surgical Aortic Valve Replacement (a Risk Score from the SURTAVI Trial).

Risk prediction scores for long-term outcomes after transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) or surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) are lacking. This study aimed to develop preprocedural risk scores for 5-year clinical outcomes after TAVI or SAVR. This analysis included 1,660 patients at an intermediate surgical risk with severe aortic stenosis randomly assigned to TAVI (n = 864) or SAVR (n = 796) from the SURTAVI (Surgical Replacement and Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation) trial.

Identification of Bacterial Taxa Present in a Concrete Pennsylvania Bridge.

Concrete contains low microbial biomass, but some bacteria can grow in this highly alkaline environment. We used silica-based DNA extraction and 16S rRNA sequence analysis to identify the bacteria in a corroded concrete bridge sample from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, , , , and were the most abundant genera.

Glutamate indicators with improved activation kinetics and localization for imaging synaptic transmission.

The fluorescent glutamate indicator iGluSnFR enables imaging of neurotransmission with genetic and molecular specificity. However, existing iGluSnFR variants exhibit low in vivo signal-to-noise ratios, saturating activation kinetics and exclusion from postsynaptic densities. Using a multiassay screen in bacteria, soluble protein and cultured neurons, we generated variants with improved signal-to-noise ratios and kinetics.

An Evaluation of the Quality of CPR Chest Compressions Performed on Football-Equipped and Obese Simulation Manikins.

Objective: Protective athletic equipment may hamper the delivery of effective chest compressions. Unfortunately, an algorithm for managing cardiac arrest emergencies with equipment-laden athletes has yet to be established by national CPR certifying agencies. Further, athletes classified as being overweight or obese carry adipose in the thoracic region, which has been reported to inhibit the ability of rescuers to provide quality chest compressions.

Design, Setting, And Participants: This post hoc analysis pooled data from the CoreValve US High Risk Pivotal (n = 615) and SURTAVI (n = 1484) randomized clinical trials (RCTs); it was supplemented by the CoreValve Extreme Risk Pivotal trial (n = 485) and CoreValve Continued Access Study (n = 2178).

System design and production practices of aquaponic stakeholders.

Aquaponics is an agricultural practice incorporating aquaculture and hydroponic principles. This study assesses the current system design and production practices of the aquaponic industry, compares these metrics by stakeholder group, identifies trends, and provides recommendations for future development. An electronic survey of aquaponic stakeholders was conducted from December 2019 to June 2020 targeting hobbyists, producers, and educators from various aquaponic-focused professional associations, email and social media groups.

Multimodality During Fixation - Part II: Evidence for Multimodality in Spatial Precision-Related Distributions and Impact on Precision Estimates.

This paper is a follow-on to our earlier paper (7), which focused on the multimodality of angular offsets. This paper applies the same analysis to the measurement of spatial precision. Following the literature, we refer these measurements as estimates of device precision, but, in fact, subject characteristics clearly affect the measurements.

Pain perception can be powerfully influenced by an individual's expectations and beliefs. Although the cortical circuitry responsible for pain modulation has been thoroughly investigated, the brainstem pathways involved in the modulatory phenomena of placebo analgesia and nocebo hyperalgesia remain to be directly addressed. This study used ultra-high-field 7 tesla functional MRI (fMRI) to accurately resolve differences in brainstem circuitry present during the generation of placebo analgesia and nocebo hyperalgesia in healthy human participants ( = 25, 12 male).

(Re)arranging "systems of care" in the early Ebola response in Sierra Leone: An interdisciplinary analysis.

Despite an expanding literature on Ebola-response, few studies detail or reflect on the responses of diverse systems of care. Little is known about how, why or in what ways, strategies of ill-health management were enacted locally, how health-systems power, authority and hierarchy were perceived and contested, or how other social systems, institutions and relationships shaped the response. This paper presents an interdisciplinary analysis of local responses in two early affected districts in Sierra Leone.

Accuracy is the mean angular offset. The mean is a highly interpretable measure of central tendency if the underlying error distribution is unimodal and normal.

Vaccinating in the Emergency Department, a Model to Overcome Influenza Vaccine Hesitancy.

Introduction: Vaccine hesitancy and delays in vaccine administration time have limited the success of prior influenza vaccination initiatives in the pediatric emergency department (ED). In 2018-2019, season 1, this ED implemented mandatory vaccine screening and offered the vaccine to all eligible patients; however, only 9% of the eligible population received the vaccine. In 2019-2020, season 2, the team sought to improve influenza vaccination rates from 9% to 15% and administer over 2,000 vaccines to eligible ED patients.

Symptomatic Lead Toxicity and Joint Pain Because of Migration of Shotgun Pellets into the Hip 12 Years After Injury: A Case Report.

Case: We describe a case of mild lead poisoning in a 25-year-old woman because of intra-articular migration of lead shot 12 years after gunshot injury to the left hip, ameliorated by arthroscopic foreign body removal. Retained lead can cause systemic symptoms of lead toxicity, supranormal blood lead concentration, and increasingly painful and destructive local arthritis even years after gunshot injury.

Conclusion: This report shows that lead fragments should be monitored closely if located near joint spaces.
