Purpose: To investigate auto- and pre-calibration coil profile estimation for parallel imaging reconstruction of hyperpolarized C MRI volumetric data.

Methods: Parallel imaging reconstruction was studied with 3 different approaches for coil profile estimation: auto-calibration, phantom calibration, and theoretic calibration. Acquisition was performed with a 3D stack-of-spirals sequence with spectral-spatial excitation and Cartesian undersampling.

Background: This study assessed the feasibility of implementing a yoga intervention adapted for participants diagnosed with chronic pain in a large Midwest neuroscience pain clinic. Although conducted using a small convenience sample, this was a novel program in that it was led by an advanced practice nurse certified in pain management and to teach yoga. She was therefore uniquely qualified to tailor the yoga practice to suit individual needs of study participants.

The complete genome sequence of an alloherpesvirus isolated from blue catfish () is reported. Genomic analyses revealed that this virus is a distinct strain of ictalurid herpesvirus 1, the first strain of which was isolated previously from a channel catfish ().

Sudden death syndrome (SDS), caused by members of species complex (FSSC) clade 2, is a major and economically important disease in soybean worldwide. The primary causal agent of SDS isolated to date in North America has been . In 2014 and 2016, SDS symptoms were found in two soybean fields located on the same farm in Michigan.

Context: Identifying the seriously ill population is integral to improving the value of health care. Efforts to identify this population using existing data are anchored to a list of severe medical conditions (SMCs) using diagnostic codes. Published approaches have used International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9) codes, which has since been replaced by ICD-10.

Purpose: MR Current Density Imaging (MRCDI) involves weak current-injection into the head. The resulting magnetic field changes are measured by MRI. Stray fields pose major challenges since these can dominate the fields caused by tissue currents.

Intranasal administration is an attractive route for systemic delivery of small, lipophilic drugs because they are rapidly absorbed through the nasal mucosa into systemic circulation. However, the low solubility of lipophilic drugs often precludes aqueous nasal spray formulations. A unique approach to circumvent solubility issues involves coadministration of a hydrophilic prodrug with an exogenous converting enzyme.

Objective: Healthcare organizations are expanding community-based serious illness care programs to deliver care for homebound patients. Programs typically focus on home-based primary care or home-based palliative care, yet this population may require both services. We developed and evaluated a primary and palliative care program serving seriously ill older adults, called the Reaching Out to Enhance the Health of Adults in Their Communities and Homes (REACH) program.

Background/objectives: In late-stage dementia, families often prioritize quality of life (QoL) and comfort, yet little research examines factors impacting QoL. We sought to (1) describe temporal trends in QoL in late-stage dementia, and (2) explore associations between patient characteristics, care interventions, and QoL.

Design: Secondary analysis of data from the Goals of Care clinical trial.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the leading causes of chronic liver disease with an estimated overall prevalence of 25% in the global adult population. Liver biopsy is the gold standard for the diagnosis of NAFLD. However, the risk of complications and collection of only 1/50,000 of the total liver volume, limits this diagnostic method in an unselected population.

Purpose: To identify specific components of ICU clinician supportive care and communication that are associated with increased post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms for surrogate decision makers of patients with chronic critical illness (CCI).

Methods: We conducted a secondary analysis of data from a randomized controlled trial of palliative care-led meetings to provide information and support for CCI surrogates. The primary outcome for this secondary analysis was PTSD symptoms at 90 days, measured by the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R).

Objectives: CaringBridge (CB) is a web-based social network where people share information, enlist support, and access resources following a difficult diagnosis; it can also be used to disseminate supportive self-care tools, such as a gratitude practice, for its users. Gratitude practices are shown to reduce stress and fear, improve sleep, and increase positive emotions and overall well-being. The purpose of this article was to report the findings of a brief gratitude intervention delivered to CB users.

Background/aims: Pain is a major concern of patients with advanced cancer and their caregivers. There is strong evidence that pain coping skills training interventions based on cognitive-behavioral principles can reduce pain severity and pain interference. However, few such interventions have been tested for patients with advanced cancer and their family caregivers.

Introduction: Low back pain is a leading disability worldwide; however, it is not often the result of a serious underlying condition such as a tumor. As a result, diagnosis of a serious underlying cause of low back pain may be delayed, such as in this case.

Case Presentation: We describe a case of a man presenting with low back pain, who was eventually diagnosed with solitary bone plasmacytoma (SBP) causing spinal cord compression from approximately T7-T9.

In the mammalian retina, direction-selectivity is thought to originate in the dendrites of GABAergic/cholinergic starburst amacrine cells, where it is first observed. However, here we demonstrate that direction selectivity in downstream ganglion cells remains remarkably unaffected when starburst dendrites are rendered non-directional, using a novel strategy combining a conditional GABA α2 receptor knockout mouse with optogenetics. We show that temporal asymmetries between excitation/inhibition, arising from the differential connectivity patterns of starburst cholinergic and GABAergic synapses to ganglion cells, form the basis for a parallel mechanism generating direction selectivity.

Background: Treatment decisions commonly have to be made in intensive care units (ICUs). These decisions are difficult for surrogate decision makers and often lead to decisional conflict, psychological distress, and treatments misaligned with patient preferences.

Objective: To determine whether a decision aid about prolonged mechanical ventilation improved prognostic concordance between surrogate decision makers and clinicians compared with a usual care control.

Design: A quantitative, cross-sectional study.

The influence of microbial factors on adverse perinatal outcomes has become the focal point of recent investigations, with particular interest in the role of the microbiome and probiotic interventions. The purpose of this scoping review was to identify and critique the most recent evidence about these factors as they relate to pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia (PEC), preterm birth (PTB), and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Four databases (PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane) were searched for articles published in English in the last 10 years with the concepts of the microbiome, probiotics, and PEC, PTB, or GDM.
