The evolution of an integrated ultrasound curriculum (iUSC) for medical students: 9-year experience.

Interest in ultrasound education in medical schools has increased dramatically in recent years as reflected in a marked increase in publications on the topic and growing attendance at international meetings on ultrasound education. In 2006, the University of South Carolina School of Medicine introduced an integrated ultrasound curriculum (iUSC) across all years of medical school. That curriculum has evolved significantly over the 9 years.

A lack of α1A-adrenergic receptor-mediated antidepressant-like effects of S-(+)-niguldipine and B8805-033 in the forced swim test.

The α1-adrenergic receptors (α1-ARs), which belong to a G protein-coupled receptor family, consist of three highly homologous subtypes known as α1A-ARs, α1B-ARs, and α1D-ARs. Our previous findings suggested that α1A-ARs are an important target for imipramine and electroconvulsive therapy. The current study sought to evaluate whether S-(+)-niguldipine and B8805-033, two selective antagonists of α1A-ARs, can evoke antidepressant-like effects in the forced swim test in rats.

Inter-patient variability of platelet reactivity in patients treated with prasugrel and ticagrelor.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the distribution of platelet reactivity values in patients treated with prasugrel and ticagrelor. This prospective observational study enrolled 200 patients treated with prasugrel or ticagrelor. Platelet aggregation was determined by multiple electrode aggregometry after stimulation with adenosine diphosphate (ADP) in the maintenance phase of treatment with prasugrel or ticagrelor.

Selective ablation of glucocorticoid receptors in the noradrenergic system affects evening corticosterone levels in a sex-dependent manner.

Background: The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, which is involved in the release of corticosterone in response to stress, exhibits large circadian variations in its activity that can also be regulated by the noradrenergic system, thereby contributing to the pathophysiology of depression. We have recently shown that mice in which glucocorticoid receptors (GR) are selectively ablated in the noradrenergic system (GR(DBHCre) mice) exhibit sex-dependent phenotype alterations, manifested as increased anxiety- and depressive-like behaviors in female but not male mutants.

Methods: In this study, we investigated the regulation of circadian HPA axis activity in GR(DBHCre) transgenic mice by measuring plasma corticosterone levels.

Disruption of glucocorticoid receptors in the noradrenergic system leads to BDNF up-regulation and altered serotonergic transmission associated with a depressive-like phenotype in female GR(DBHCre) mice.

Recently, we have demonstrated that conditional inactivation of glucocorticoid receptors (GRs) in the noradrenergic system, may evoke depressive-like behavior in female but not male mutant mice (GR(DBHCre) mice). The aim of the current study was to dissect how selective ablation of glucocorticoid signaling in the noradrenergic system influences the previously reported depressive-like phenotype and whether it might be linked to neurotrophic alterations or secondary changes in the serotonergic system. We demonstrated that selective depletion of GRs enhances brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) expression in female but not male GR(DBHCre) mice on both the mRNA and protein levels.

A speech reception in noise test for preschool children (the Galker-test): Validity, reliability and acceptance.

Purpose: This study evaluates initial validity and reliability of the "Galker test of speech reception in noise" developed for Danish preschool children suspected to have problems with hearing or understanding speech against strict psychometric standards and assesses acceptance by the children.

Methods: The Galker test is an audio-visual, computerised, word discrimination test in background noise, originally comprised of 50 word pairs. Three hundred and eighty eight children attending ordinary day care centres and aged 3-5 years were included.

(7)Li(p,n)(7)Be is an endothermic reaction and working near its threshold (1.88 MeV) has the advantage of neutron spectra with maximum energies of about 100 keV, considerably lower than at higher beam energies, or than using other neutron-producing reactions or as for the uranium fission spectrum, relevant for BNCT based on nuclear reactors. With this primary energy it is much easier to obtain the energies needed for treating deep seated tumors by BNCT (about 10 keV).

Fluoroscopically Guided Diagnostic and Therapeutic Intra-Articular Sacroiliac Joint Injections: A Systematic Review.

Objective: To assess the validity of fluoroscopically guided diagnostic intra-articular injections of local anesthetic and effectiveness of intra-articular steroid injections in treating sacroiliac joint (SIJ) pain.

Design: Systematic review.

Interventions: Ten reviewers independently assessed 45 publications on diagnostic validity or effectiveness of fluoroscopically guided intra-articular SIJ injections.

Textual analysis of collaboration notes of the telemedical heart failure network HerzMobil Tirol.

Unlabelled: Management of heart failure is usually multidisciplinary and collaboration between stakeholders in a dedicated HI network like the HerzMobil Tirol can be supported by a mHealth-based telemedicine approach. The aim is to gain insights through textual analysis of collaboration notes that might trigger further developments and improvements of the HI network. A reusable pipeline for textual analysis of unstructured textual notes was implemented using the open source analytics software KNIME.

Cardiovascular diseases belong to the most common causes of death. Telehealth applications can help to improve therapy and support behavior change. It was the objective of the present work to construct and evaluate within a trial (25 patients) an automated feedback system for a telehealth application to support behavior change.

Development of text mining based classification of written communication within a telemedical collaborative network.

Chronic diseases like Heart Failure are widespread in the ageing population. Affected patients can be treated with the aid of a disease management program, including a telemedical collaborative network. Evaluation of a currently used system has shown that the information of the textual communication is of pivotal importance for the collaboration in the network.

Compensatory mechanisms in genetic models of neurodegeneration: are the mice better than humans?

Neurodegenerative diseases are one of the main causes of mental and physical disabilities. Neurodegeneration has been estimated to begin many years before the first clinical symptoms manifest, and even a prompt diagnosis at this stage provides very little advantage for a more effective treatment as the currently available pharmacotherapies are based on disease symptomatology. The etiology of the majority of neurodegenerative diseases remains unknown, and even for those diseases caused by identified genetic mutations, the direct pathways from gene alteration to final cell death have not yet been fully elucidated.

Classification Accuracy of Sequentially Administered WAIS-IV Short Forms.

A Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Fourth Edition (WAIS-IV) short form (SF) may be effective for ruling out subnormal intelligence. To create a useful SF, subtest administration should follow the order prescribed in the manual and, depending upon individual performance, be terminated after completion of 2, 3, 4, or 5 subtests. One hundred and twenty-two patients completed the WAIS-IV.

Oxidized glutathione (GSSG) inhibits epithelial sodium channel activity in primary alveolar epithelial cells.

Amiloride-sensitive epithelial Na(+) channels (ENaC) regulate fluid balance in the alveoli and are regulated by oxidative stress. Since glutathione (GSH) is the predominant antioxidant in the lungs, we proposed that changes in glutathione redox potential (Eh) would alter cell signaling and have an effect on ENaC open probability (Po). In the present study, we used single channel patch-clamp recordings to examine the effect of oxidative stress, via direct application of glutathione disulfide (GSSG), on ENaC activity.

The moderating role of objective and subjective numeracy in attribute framing.

Previous research has found that objective numeracy moderates framing effects: People who are less numerate were found to be more susceptible to goal-framing and attribute-framing effects than people who are highly numerate. This study examined the possibility that subjective numeracy likewise moderates attribute framing in contexts where participants are presented with percentages of success or failure. The results show that compared with highly numerate participants, less numerate participants were more susceptible to the effect of attribute framing.

Tip-of-the-tongue in a second language: the effects of brief first-language exposure and long-term use.

Bilinguals have more tip-of-the-tongue (TOT) incidents than monolinguals. Whereas previous research has focused on differences in the long term language experience between these groups, the present study examined the hypothesis that both long-term and transient context factors modulate TOT rates. Russian-Hebrew bilinguals who acquired Hebrew either early (<5years) or late (>11years) were compared to native Hebrew speakers on a picture naming task in Hebrew, before and after viewing a short movie in Russian.

The prescription opioid and heroin crisis: a public health approach to an epidemic of addiction.

Public health authorities have described, with growing alarm, an unprecedented increase in morbidity and mortality associated with use of opioid pain relievers (OPRs). WAIS-IV administration errors: effects of altered response requirements on Symbol Search and violation of standard surface-variety patterns on Block Design.

This study utilized a sample of 50 college students to assess the possibility that responding to the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Fourth Edition (WAIS-IV) Symbol Search subtest items with an "x" instead of a "single slash mark" would affect performance. A second sample of 50 college students was used to assess the impact on WAIS-IV Block Design performance of presenting all the items with only red surfaces facing up. The modified Symbol Search and Block Design administrations yielded mean scaled scores and raw scores that did not differ significantly from mean scores obtained with standard administrations.
