Background: The evaluation and management of insect sting allergy is a complex core competency taught in Allergy and Immunology fellowship programs. It is unclear if current training on insect allergy is sufficient to meet the needs of the field, and what training barriers exist.

Bats (order Chiroptera) are some of the most abundant mammals on earth and their species ecology strongly influences zoonotic potential. While substantial research has been conducted on bat-associated viruses, particularly on those that can cause disease in humans and/or livestock, globally, limited research has focused on endemic bats in the USA. The southwest region of the US is of particular interest because of its high diversity of bat species.

Sentinel case of group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus causing constrictive pericarditis presenting as hypogammaglobulinemia.

This is a unique case of a previously healthy 7-year-old boy, which highlights the importance of considering immunodeficiency when a rare infection occurs. In the following case report, the patient develops constrictive pericarditis secondary to group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal infection. As a result of this infection, we speculate that he develops hypogammaglobulinemia secondary to the documented association between constrictive pericarditis and intestinal lymphangiectasia because an extensive work-up for a primary immunodeficiency was negative.

Inpatient allergy/immunology consultations in a tertiary care setting.

Few studies have examined inpatient referral patterns for fellowship training programs and none for allergy/immunology (AI) since 2003. The primary end point was the reason for consultation, and secondary end points included the AI diagnosis made and outcomes. We retrospectively reviewed all inpatient AI consultations from July 1, 2001 through June 30, 2007.

A case of severe refractory chronic urticaria: a novel method for evaluation and treatment.

With cholinergic urticaria (ChU), the ultimate diagnosis often depends on the demonstration of characteristic urticaria by appropriate provocation. Several treatment options may be helpful but traditional options (antihistamines, leukotriene inhibitors, and immunosuppressives) may be exhausted by the refractory ChU patient. Here, we describe such a case.

S-ketamine and GABA-A-receptor interaction in humans: an exploratory study with I-123-iomazenil SPECT.

Objective: We aimed to probe for regional cerebral effects of S-ketamine on in vivo GABA-A-receptor binding in healthy human subjects.

Methods: We investigated I-123-iomazenil SPECT before, during and after administration of S-ketamine in a blinded placebo-controlled study design (n = 12 in both groups). Analyses of SPECT were performed with voxel-based statistical parametric mapping (SPM), and statistical comparisons were made between the groups.
