Our aim was to evaluate the intrabony friction heat produced by implant drills, using different drill materials and methods of cooling. Four pilot drills and 4 form drills were used. The following combinations of drill material and cooling supply were tested: steel and external cooling; steel and internal cooling; steel coated with zirconium nitride and external cooling; and zirconium oxide and external cooling.

The oral cancer knowledge of dentists in Northern Germany after educational intervention.

The objective of this study was to assess the knowledge about oral cancer, in particular about diagnostic items and risk factors, after educational intervention by means of a standardized survey. On the basis of the evaluation at baseline, an educational programme consisting of different approaches (for instance, oral presentations, poster, DVD and a brochure) was designed. In May 2009, the questionnaire 'Practices and opinions about oral cancer' focusing on the knowledge about diagnostic factors and risk factors for oral cancer was mailed to every dentist in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany (n = 2280).

Aim: The aim of this systematic review was to screen the literature in order to locate animal and clinical data on bone-implant contact (BIC) and clinical survival/success that would help to answer the question 'Are ceramic implants a viable alternative to titanium implants?'

Material And Methods: A literature search was performed in the following databases: (1) the Cochrane Oral Health Group's Trials Register, (2) the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), (3) MEDLINE (Ovid), and (4) PubMed. To evaluate biocompatibility, animal investigations were scrutinized regarding the amount of BIC and to assess implant longevity clinical data were evaluated.

Results: The PubMed search yielded 349 titles and the Cochrane/MEDLINE search yielded 881 titles.

Osseointegration and clinical success of zirconia dental implants: a systematic review.

Purpose: Various ceramic implant systems made of yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Y-TZP) have become commercially available in recent years. A systematic search of the literature was performed to assess the clinical success of dental Y-TZP implants and whether the osseointegration of Y-TZP is comparable to that of titanium, the standard implant material.

Quality of life of patients with maxillofacial defects after treatment for malignancy.

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate how cancer patients with maxillofacial defects evaluate their quality of life after prosthodontic therapy, complemented by a retrospective interview for judging the various therapy steps. The results were compared with a nontumor control group (multiple tooth extractions) and with population-based norm data.

Materials And Methods: A total of 34 patients were included in the study, 17 in each group.
