Frequent sauna bathing has been associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and proposed as a mediator for improved health. Therefore, the aim was to describe and compare sauna bathers with non-sauna bathers in northern Sweden based on their demographics, health and life attitudes, and to describe sauna bathers' sauna habits. Questions on sauna bathing habits were included in the questionnaire for the participants in the Northern Sweden MONICA (multinational monitoring of trends and determinants in cardiovascular disease) study, conducted during spring of 2022, inviting adults 25-74 years living in the two northernmost counties of Sweden (Norr- and Västerbotten), randomly selected from the population register.

Mastocytosis is a heterogeneous disorder characterized by abnormal mast cell accumulation, in which the clinical severity may be explained by distinct molecular mechanisms. This study aimed to explore plasma protein biomarkers associated with systemic mastocytosis subtypes, as well as the cellular origin of the identified proteins. Plasma samples from patients with mastocytosis, including cutaneous mastocytosis (CM), indolent systemic mastocytosis (ISM), and advanced systemic mastocytosis (AdvSM), and a reference group of patients with polycythemia vera, were analyzed by Proximity Extension Assay technology targeting 275 proteins.

Certain laboratory abnormalities correlate with subvariants of systemic mastocytosis (SM) and are often prognostically relevant. To assess the diagnostic and prognostic value of individual serum chemistry parameters in SM, 2607 patients enrolled within the European Competence Network on Mastocytosis and 575 patients enrolled within the German Registry on Eosinophils and Mast Cells were analyzed. For screening and diagnosis of SM, tryptase was identified as the most specific serum parameter.

Article Synopsis
  • - Researchers studied the incidence, prevalence, survival rates, and comorbidities of adult mastocytosis patients in Sweden from 2001 to 2018 using national health registries.
  • - They identified 2,040 cases of mastocytosis, with an annual incidence of 1.56 per 100,000 and a prevalence of 23.9 per 100,000, finding that patients had a higher burden of other diseases and lower overall survival compared to matched controls.
  • - The study concluded that mastocytosis is more common than previously thought in other settings and highlighted the need for better diagnostics, while acknowledging limitations like underreporting of cases.

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) is used in a majority of healthy donors to obtain peripheral blood stem cells for allogeneic stem cell transplantation. Since high levels of G-CSF activates endothelial cells and can induce a pro-coagulatory state, and fuelled by case reports of cardiovascular events in donors, some concerns have been raised about a potential for an increased risk of cardiovascular events for the donors after donation. We studied the incidence of cardiovascular disease following stem cell donation in a Swedish national register based cohort of 1098 peripheral blood stem cell donors between 1998 and 2016.

Background: A growing evidence base supports the use of autologous haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (aHSCT) for treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS), but it has not yet been integrated into most national clinical guidelines. The objective of this study was to assess efficacy and safety when aHSCT is implemented in routine healthcare.

Methods: We assessed 231 patients and the final analysis included 174 RRMS patients who were treated with aHSCT in Sweden before 1 January 2020.

In 2002, the European Competence Network on Mastocytosis (ECNM) was launched as a multidisciplinary collaborative initiative to increase the awareness and to improve diagnosis and management of patients with mast cell (MC) disorders. The ECNM consists of a net of specialized centers, expert physicians, and scientists who dedicate their work to MC diseases. One essential aim of the ECNM is to timely distribute all available information about the disease to patients, doctors, and scientists.

Background: The physical risks involved in donating hematopoietic stem cells have been thoroughly studied, but little is known about the psychological risks potential donors might face before donation. The aim of this study was to describe potential the pre-donation worries and psychological well-being of hematopoietic stem cell donors and investigate possible associations between donor characteristics and psychological well-being.

Methods: In a cross-sectional, national cohort study, we describe pre-donation worries and psychological well-being and investigate possible associations between donor characteristics and psychological well-being.

Background: Organomegaly, including splenomegaly, hepatomegaly, and/or lymphadenopathy, are important diagnostic and prognostic features in patients with cutaneous mastocytosis (CM) or systemic mastocytosis (SM).

Objectives: To investigate the prevalence and prognostic impact of 1 or more organomegalies on clinical course and survival in patients with CM/SM.

Methods: Therefore, 3155 patients with CM (n = 1002 [32%]) or SM (n = 2153 [68%]) enrolled within the registry of the European Competence Network on Mastocytosis were analyzed.

Mast cell leukemia (MCL) is a rare subtype of systemic mastocytosis defined by ≥20% mast cells (MC) on a bone marrow aspirate. We evaluated 92 patients with MCL from the European Competence Network on Mastocytosis registry. Thirty-one (34%) patients had a diagnosis of MCL with an associated hematologic neoplasm (MCL-AHN).

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) has been used for over 20 years to obtain peripheral blood stem cells from healthy donors for allogeneic stem cell transplantation. Concerns have been raised about a potentially increased cancer incidence in donors after donation, especially regarding haematological malignancies. In a prospective Swedish national cohort study, we studied the cancer incidence after donation in 1082 Swedish peripheral blood stem cell donors, donating between 1998 and 2014.

In the current classification of the World Health Organization (WHO), bone marrow mastocytosis (BMM) is a provisional variant of indolent systemic mastocytosis (ISM) defined by bone marrow involvement and absence of skin lesions. However, no additional diagnostic criteria for BMM have been proposed. Within the registry dataset of the European Competence Network on Mastocytosis, we compared characteristics and outcomes of 390 patients with BMM and 1175 patients with typical ISM.

Mechanisms for late-onset neutropenia (LON) after rituximab treatment are poorly defined both for non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) and for autoimmune disorders. We performed a case-control analysis of a prospective cohort of 169 evaluable consecutive rituximab-treated NHL patients to assess cytokines involved in neutro- and lymphopoiesis (G-CSF, SDF1, BAFF, APRIL) and inflammation (CRP) as possible LON mechanisms. Fifteen patients (9%) developed LON (peripheral blood /PB/ absolute neutrophil counts /ANC/ < 0.

In systemic mastocytosis (SM), the clinical features and survival vary greatly. Patient-related factors determining the outcome in SM are largely unknown. We examined the impact of sex on the clinical features, progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS) in 3403 patients with mastocytosis collected in the registry of the European Competence Network on Mastocytosis (ECNM).

Advanced systemic mastocytosis is a relatively rare entity where allogeneic stem cell transplantation can lead to the cure of the disease in selected patients. Delayed incomplete responses with graft-versus-mastocytosis effect were published in a few cases. In this particular patient's report, we describe the direct evidence and potency of graft-versus-mastocytosis effect of donor lymphocyte infusions in a patient with systemic mastocytosis with associated hematological neoplasm (SM-AHN).

Background: In indolent systemic mastocytosis (ISM), several risk factors of disease progression have been identified. Previous studies, performed with limited patient numbers, have also shown that the clinical course in ISM is stable and comparable to that of cutaneous mastocytosis (CM). The aim of this project was to compare the prognosis of patients with ISM with that of patients with CM.

Introduction: Different forms of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) remain a major cause of morbidity and mortality after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). The prognosis for steroid-refractory chronic GVHD (cGVHD) remains poor. Our aim was to evaluate extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) treatment in cGVHD patients with different organ involvement to detect subgroups of patients with the best response.

Mastocytosis is a rare and multifaceted disease group characterized by mast cell accumulation in the skin and/or internal organs. In its most common form solitary or widespread, often itchy, red-brown skin lesions appear in childhood or during adulthood (cutaneous mastocytosis). The skin lesions are not always easy to recognize by medical professionals; hence, a correct diagnosis is often delayed.
