Previous research has successfully used feature integration theory to operationalise the predictions of Perceptual Load Theory, while simultaneously testing the predictions of both models. We describe a sol-gel synthetic method for the production of praseodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) nanoparticles suitable for X-ray inducible photodynamic therapy (X-PDT). Our sol-gel based approach was optimized by varying temperature and time of calcination, resulting in nanoparticles that were smooth, spherical, and 50-200 nm in crystallite size. The powders were uniformly coated with a thin (10 nm) layer of silica to facilitate surface conjugation with functional moieties.

In this paper we report on the metabolic rates and respiratory patterns measured from gregarious brown locusts, Locustana pardalina, collected from the Nama Karoo region in South Africa. All five instar hopper stages and adults were collected over a three year period when significant numbers of locust swarms were seen. Flow-through respirometry was used to measure the CO emission from individual locusts from all the developmental stages and adults within a week of collection.

Subthalamic nucleus (STN) local field potentials (LFP) are neural signals that have been shown to reveal motor and language behavior, as well as pathological parkinsonian states. We use a research-grade implantable neurostimulator (INS) with data collection capabilities to record STN-LFP outside the operating room to determine the reliability of the signals over time and assess their dynamics with respect to behavior and dopaminergic medication. Seven subjects were implanted with the recording augmented deep brain stimulation (DBS) system, and bilateral STN-LFP recordings were collected in the clinic over twelve months.

The chromosomal translocation t(4;14) deregulates MMSET (WHSC1/NSD2) expression and is a poor prognostic factor in multiple myeloma (MM). MMSET encodes two major protein isoforms. We have characterized the role of the shorter isoform (REIIBP) in myeloma cells and identified a clear and novel interaction of REIIBP with members of the SMN (survival of motor neuron) complex that directly affects the assembly of the spliceosomal ribonucleic particles.

The pivotal role of LYRIC/AEG-1 in malignant transformation, tumourigenesis and chemo-resistance has previously been demonstrated in different cell types and sub-cellular compartments. The localisation of LYRIC/AEG-1 appears crucial to its function and is regulated by three lysine-rich nuclear localisation signal regions, one of which was previously demonstrated to be modified by ubiquitin. Here we show that mutation of LYRIC/AEG-1 at K486 and K491 results in a loss of ubiquitination.

CAAX proteins have essential roles in multiple signalling pathways, controlling processes such as proliferation, differentiation and carcinogenesis. The ∼120 mammalian CAAX proteins function at cellular membranes and include the Ras superfamily of small GTPases, nuclear lamins, the γ-subunit of heterotrimeric GTPases, and several protein kinases and phosphatases. The proper localization of CAAX proteins to cell membranes is orchestrated by a series of post-translational modifications of the carboxy-terminal CAAX motifs (where C is cysteine, A is an aliphatic amino acid and X is any amino acid).
