There is limited literature highlighting the development of right ventricular (RV) failure while on ECMO. We conducted a retrospective multicenter observational study including 70 patients who were placed on veno-venous (VV)-ECMO for respiratory failure at Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, and Mayo Clinic, Rochester, between January 2018 and June 2022 and had at least two post-ECMO transthoracic echoes.

Background: Impella is an advanced ventricular assist device frequently used as a bridge to heart transplantation. The association of Impella with increased rates of gout flares has not been studied. Our primary aim is to determine the rates of gout flares in patients on Impella support.

A suspected case of Lyme disease causing complete heart block.

Carditis is a rare complication of Lyme disease and usually presents in the early dissemination phase, several weeks after exposure to a tick bite. Conduction abnormalities are the most common manifestation of Lyme carditis. Experiences of childhood trauma (abuse and neglect) are disproportionately higher in those with opioid use disorder (OUD). Childhood trauma may affect the reinforcing and rewarding properties of opioid drugs and responses to pain, potentially via developmental changes to the endogenous opioid system. This has been supported by preclinical research, yet this has not been investigated in non-addicted humans.

Academic practice partnerships: A review of a statewide population health nursing leadership initiative.

Objective: In 2012, the state public health nurse (PHN) Leaders Workgroup formed with members from the state PHN Administrators organization and PHN faculty to facilitate the development of statewide PHN Academic practice partnerships (APP's). In 2016, the workgroup received a state Nurses Foundation grant for $6,000 followed by $5,000 in 2017 to fund the first 2 years of APP projects.

Design: The workgroup disseminated two calls for proposals to the Deans of state academic nursing institutions and local health department leaders, utilizing an application adapted from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) APP Toolkit.

Efficient DNA double-strand break (DSB) repair is a critical determinant of cell survival in response to DNA damaging agents, and it plays a key role in the maintenance of genomic integrity. Homologous recombination (HR) and non-homologous end-joining (NHEJ) represent the two major pathways by which DSBs are repaired in mammalian cells. We now understand that HR and NHEJ repair are composed of multiple sub-pathways, some of which still remain poorly understood.

Effects of early-life exposure to Western diet and wheel access on metabolic syndrome profiles in mice bred for high voluntary exercise.

Experimental studies manipulating diet and exercise have shown varying effects on metabolic syndrome components in both humans and rodents. To examine the potential interactive effects of diet, exercise and genetic background, we studied mice from four replicate lines bred (52 generations) for high voluntary wheel running (HR lines) and four unselected control lines (C). At weaning, animals were housed for 60 days with or without wheels and fed either a standard chow or Western diet (WD, 42% kcal from fat).

Spontaneous dissection of the external iliac artery secondary to golf club manufacturing.

Spontaneous dissection of the external iliac artery in the absence of aortic disease is extremely uncommon. We report the conservative treatment of a 46-year-old male patient who presented with acute left lower limb ischemia due to an isolated dissection of the external iliac artery secondary to repetitive swinging movements during golf club manufacturing. Although syndromes of nonatherosclerotic vascular disease secondary to repetitive movements in high-level athletic activity have been previously described in cyclists, long distance runners, and rugby players, we believe this to be the first occupational case associated with golf.

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) now affects approximately 20% of adults older than 55 years to an estimated total of 27 million people in the Western World. The aim of this paper is to describe the medical management of PAD for the non-vascular specialist, particularly general practitioners, where PAD has now been included in the Northern Ireland Department of Health's Primary Care Service Framework (Directed Enhanced Service).

Effects of Src kinase inhibition by saracatinib (AZD0530) on bone turnover in advanced malignancy in a Phase I study.

Saracatinib (AZD0530) is an orally active once-daily Src kinase inhibitor which modulates key signaling pathways in cancer cells. In a Phase I study in patients with advanced solid malignancies resistant to standard treatment we assessed the effect of saracatinib on bone turnover. Fifty-one patients were randomized into three parallel groups to receive saracatinib 50, 125 or 175 mg/day.

The role of carbohydrate drinks in pre-operative nutrition for elective colorectal surgery.

Introduction: Traditionally, patients have been fasted from midnight on the night before elective surgery. With the advent of the enhanced recovery programme for elective colorectal surgery, there has been a major change in established practice with patients able to continue with clear fluids up to two hours prior to surgery and solids up to six hours prior to surgery. It has been suggested that nutritional supplements in the immediate pre-operative period enhance post-operative recovery.

Effect of stopping risedronate after long-term treatment on bone turnover.

Context: Determining how quickly bisphosphonate treatment effects begin to regress is crucial when considering termination of treatment.

Objective: Our objective was to assess the effects of 1 yr discontinuation of risedronate use in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis who had previously received risedronate for 2 or 7 yr.

Design And Setting: Before initiation of the current study, placebo/5-mg-risedronate patients had received placebo for 5 yr and risedronate for 2 yr, whereas 5-mg-risedronate patients had received risedronate for a total of 7 yr.

Risedronate in adults with osteogenesis imperfecta type I: increased bone mineral density and decreased bone turnover, but high fracture rate persists.

High risk of peripheral arterial disease in the United Kingdom: 2-year results of a prospective registry.

We report a prospective 2-year, multicenter study of patients presenting with intermittent claudication (IC; ankle brachial blood pressure index, ABPI ≤ 0.9). Mean age of the 473 patients enrolled was 68 years, 20% were diabetics, 30% had prior symptomatic coronary heart disease (CHD), 7% had prior stroke, and 39% were current smokers.
