Prion-like proteins are involved in many aspects of cellular physiology, including cellular memory. In response to deceptive courtship, budding yeast escapes pheromone-induced cell-cycle arrest through the coalescence of the G1/S inhibitor Whi3 into a dominant, inactive super-assembly. Whi3 is a mnemon (Whi3), a protein that conformational change maintains as a trait in the mother cell but is not inherited by the daughter cells.

Background: Air ambulance transport for injured patients is vitally important given increasing patient volumes, the limited number of trauma centres and inadequate subspecialty coverage in nontrauma hospitals. Air ambulance services have been shown to improve patient outcomes compared with ground transport in select circumstances. Our primary goal was to compare injuries, interventions and outcomes in patients transported by helicopter versus nonhelicopter transport.

Purpose: Several studies have reported that carotid endarterectomy (CEA) with patch angioplasty has results that are superior to primary closure. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) patching has been shown to have results comparable with autogenous vein patching; however, it requires a prolonged hemostasis time. Therefore, many surgeons are using collagen-impregnated Dacron patching (Hemashield [HP]).

Endovascular repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) seems to hold the potential for decreased perioperative mortality and morbidity associated with the standard open repair by eliminating major surgical exposure of the aorta and prolonged aortic cross-clamping. After several years of FDA-approved clinical trials of multiple aortic-stented grafts, the FDA, in September 1999, approved two devices (the ANCURE and the AneuRx) for commercial use in the United States. We implanted the first device in the Tri-State area at the Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC) on Feb.

The release of several randomized trials comparing carotid endarterectomy (CEA) to other methods of stroke prevention in the early 1990s established CEA as the "gold standard" in the prevention of stroke from carotid occlusive disease. This study examines 510 of the CEAs performed by the first author at Charleston Area Medical Center in Charleston, W. Va.

Ureteral injury from blunt abdominal trauma is very uncommon and is reported most often in children. We report a case mid-ureteral transection following blunt abdominal trauma that resulted in nephrectomy. There was also an associated aortic dissection.

Background: This study examined the importance of ultrasonic plaque morphology and its correlation to the presence of intraplaque hemorrhage and clinical implications.

Methods: One hundred fifty-two carotid plaques associated with > or = 50% internal carotid artery stenoses in 135 patients who had carotid endarterectomies were characterized ultrasonographically into irregular/ulcerative, smooth, heterogeneous, homogeneous, or not defined. All plaques were examined pathologically for the presence of intraplaque hemorrhage.
