Article Synopsis
  • Myosteatosis, characterized by fat buildup in skeletal muscle, is common among patients referred for liver transplantation (LT) and its effects on physical function and clinical outcomes remain uncertain.
  • In a study involving 237 patients, those with myosteatosis showed increased frailty and poorer physical function compared to those without, but the impact on hospitalization rates and surgical complications was less clear after adjustments.
  • Overall, while myosteatosis is linked to diminished physical abilities, it does not seem to significantly affect the likelihood of receiving a transplant or post-operative complications.

Background: Digital food records offer efficiencies in collecting and assessing dietary information remotely; however, research into factors impacting their translation into clinical settings is limited.

Methods: The study examined factors that may impact the integration of digital food records into clinical dietetic practice by assessing (1) the source and rate of data errors received, (2) the impact of dietitian-adjusted data on dietary variables and (3) the acceptance of use in a complex chronic condition cohort. Adults from specialist clinics enroled in a randomised controlled feasibility trial participated.

Background: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection in infants is a major cause of viral bronchiolitis and hospitalisation. We have previously shown in a murine model that ongoing infection with the gut helminth Heligmosomoides polygyrus protects against RSV infection through type I interferon (IFN-I) dependent reduction of viral load. Yet, the cellular basis for this protection has remained elusive.

Exercise interventions positively affect numerous cardiometabolic risk factors. To better evaluate the health effects of exercise training, it may be more appropriate to evaluate risk factors together. The Metabolic Syndrome Severity Score (MetSSS) is a composite score representing cardiometabolic risk.

The intestinal epithelium has a high turnover rate and constantly renews itself through proliferation of intestinal crypt cells, which depends on insufficiently characterized signals from the microenvironment. Here, we showed that colonic macrophages were located directly adjacent to epithelial crypt cells in mice, where they metabolically supported epithelial cell proliferation in an mTORC1-dependent manner. Specifically, deletion of tuberous sclerosis complex 2 (Tsc2) in macrophages activated mTORC1 signaling that protected against colitis-induced intestinal damage and induced the synthesis of the polyamines spermidine and spermine.

Article Synopsis
  • - Healthy dietary patterns are linked to lower inflammation and reduced cardiovascular disease risk, assessable through diet quality scores like DASH and Mediterranean Diet.
  • - A study involving 100 adults measured inflammation through various markers (hsCRP, PAF, Lp-PLA) and examined their correlation with six dietary scores, finding hsCRP correlated with diet scores but novel markers showed weaker associations.
  • - Increasing adherence to certain diets resulted in significant reductions in hsCRP levels, while the impact of the novel inflammation markers may be influenced by COVID-19, indicating a need for future research outside of pandemic conditions.

Introduction: The putative "renal-K switch" mechanism links dietary potassium intake with sodium retention and involves activation of the sodium chloride (NaCl) cotransporter (NCC) in the distal convoluted tubule in response to low potassium intake, and suppression in response to high potassium intake. This study examined NCC abundance and phosphorylation (phosphorylated NCC [pNCC]) in urinary extracellular vesicles (uEVs) isolated from healthy adults on a high sodium diet to determine tubular responses to alteration in potassium chloride (KCl) intake.

Methods: Healthy adults maintained on a high sodium (∼4.

Traditionally cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk has been assessed through blood lipids and inflammatory marker C-reactive protein (hsCRP). Recent clinical interest in novel pro-inflammatory markers platelet-activating factor (PAF) and lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A (Lp-PLA ) recognizes that vascular damage can exist in the absence of traditional risk factors. This cross-sectional study investigated the potential relationship between circulating PAF, Lp-PLA , hsCRP, and traditional risk factors for CVD.

Purpose Of Review: Chronic noncommunicable diseases remain the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide and the majority are preventable with a healthy diet and lifestyle, but controversy remains as to the best approach. Greater adherence to a traditional Mediterranean diet has consistently been associated with lower morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular disease, diabetes and many cancers, and lower all-cause mortality. Despite the well known benefits on chronic disease risk there remains some scepticism as to the effects of this dietary pattern across populations outside the Mediterranean and the mechanisms of action of this traditional plant-based dietary pattern.
