Improving the detection of congenital syphilis: reviewing test utility and adherence to recommendations.

Western Australia (WA) has experienced a resurgence of congenital syphilis. Appropriate microbiology testing of the neonate is recommended to confirm infection, including syphilis immunoglobulin M (IgM), rapid plasma reagin (RPR) paired with a maternal sample, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) on placenta and nasal swabs. We examined the performance of microbiology tests in confirmed congenital syphilis cases and the adherence to testing recommendations in those assessed as high risk.

Background: People with persistent pain are frequently offered a pain management programme (PMP) as part of their care plan. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) principles often underpin PMPs and has a good evidence base; nevertheless, more recent systematic reviews have suggested that its effectiveness is limited. Compassion-focused therapy (CFT) is a form of 'third-wave CBT' that offers an alternative and complementary view of pain, encouraging the person to be alongside their experience of pain and respond to it using skills of compassion they have learnt.

Transition to adult care for pediatric liver transplant recipients: the Western Australian experience.

Transition to adult care is a vulnerable period for pediatric transplant recipients and is associated with reduced medication compliance, graft loss, and increased mortality. Psychosocial outcomes in young adults differ between pediatric transplant recipients and their healthy peers. We conducted a single-center, retrospective cohort study of all pediatric liver transplant recipients who were transitioned through our center.
