Article Synopsis
  • Cough variant asthma (CVA) is a common condition causing chronic cough, but its complex nature and unclear biological mechanisms make treatment challenging.
  • A study analyzed the sputum metabolome of CVA patients, finding alterations in metabolic pathways linked to arginine, purine, and pyrimidine metabolism that could be improved with anti-asthmatic medication.
  • Specific metabolites, like dipeptides and thiamine phosphate, were identified as potential biomarkers for both diagnosing CVA and predicting treatment responses, suggesting issues with mitochondrial energy metabolism may play a role in CVA's development.

Article Synopsis
  • * In a study of 55 PBB patients compared to 220 non-PBB controls, PBB patients exhibited a shorter cough duration and were more likely to have symptoms such as productive cough and yellow phlegm.
  • * Key indicators for diagnosing PBB include the presence of yellow phlegm, productive cough, sensation of mucus in the throat, and increased sputum lymphocytes, showing moderate sensitivity and specificity for identifying the condition.

Small airway dysfunction (SAD) commonly presents in patients with classic asthma, which is associated with airway inflammation, disease severity, and asthma control. However, the prevalence of SAD, its relationship with cough severity and airway inflammation, and its development after antiasthmatic treatment in patients with cough variant asthma (CVA) need to be clarified. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of SAD and its relationship with clinical and pathophysiological characteristics in patients with CVA and the change in small airway function after antiasthmatic treatment.
