Genetic analysis in model systems using bioinformatic approaches provides a rich context for a concrete and conceptual understanding of gene structure and function. With the intent to engage students in research and explore disease biology utilizing the nematode model, we developed a semester-long course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE) in a hybrid (online/in-person) learning environment-the gene-editing and evolutionary nematode exploration CURE (GENE-CURE). Using a combination of bioinformatic and molecular genetic tools, students performed structure-function analysis of disease-associated variants of uncertain significance (VUS) in human orthologs.

Surface codes are the most promising candidates for fault-tolerant quantum computation. Single qudit errors are typically modeled as Pauli operators, to which general errors are converted via randomizing methods. Pancreatobiliary pathology encompasses all benign and malignant disease within the pancreas and biliary tract; pancreatic cancer is currently the seventh leading cause of death worldwide accounting for approximately 466,000 deaths per annum. Cytology has been increasingly used in the physician's toolbox to provide an accurate, non-invasive and cost-effective modality for the diagnosis of pancreatobiliary lesions. The cytological appearance alone may be insufficient to establish the diagnosis and it is crucial for effective clinicopathological correlation in a multidisciplinary setting, highlighting the vital role of the pathologist to ensure effective and quality care.

Distributed quantum information processing is based on the transmission of quantum data over lossy channels between quantum processing nodes. These nodes may be separated by a few microns or on planetary scale distances, but transmission losses due to absorption and/or scattering in the channel are the major source of error for most distributed quantum information tasks. Of course, quantum error correction (QEC) and detection techniques can be used to mitigate such effects, but error detection approaches have severe performance limitations due to the signaling constraints between nodes, and so error correction approaches are preferable-assuming one has sufficient high quality local operations.

Background: The scapula is a critical link utilized in the kinetic chain to achieve efficient overhead movement and transfer energy from the lower extremity to the upper extremity. Additionally, daily activities such as sitting at a computer or driving in a car may negatively influence an individual's ability to maintain proper body posture and therefore compromise those movements. To reduce these negative influences, posture garments have been designed to cue the individual in maintaining and improving posture and alignment, specifically targeting scapular positioning.

Background: Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a rare, severe, otherwise fatal viral infection of the white matter of the brain caused by the polyomavirus JC virus, which typically occurs only in immunocompromised patients. One patient with dominant gain-of-function (GOF) mutation in signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 (STAT1) with chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis and PML was reported previously. The numbers and types of ionotropic glutamate receptors at most vertebrate central excitatory synapses are altered as a function of changes in input activity patterns that occur during postnatal development. Activity-dependent developmental alterations in glutamate receptors underlie lasting changes in synaptic efficacy (plasticity) and metaplasticity (the plasticity of synaptic plasticity), which are critical elements of normal brain maturation. Understanding the specific involvement of glutamate receptors in synaptic development and function is made multiplicatively complex by the existence of a large number of glutamate receptor subunits, numerous subunit-specific amino acid sequences that regulate receptor function, and subunit-specific synaptic insertion restrictions imposed by associated anchoring proteins.

To clarify expectations for mature cutting skills and investigate the influences of cutting task and scissor type, we videotaped 60 typical adults cutting three shapes with two different types of scissors. The videotapes were reviewed, and 38 aspects of grasp and cutting motions were rated. Percentages of participants who used a particular grip or cutting motion for each shape with each scissor type were reported and compared.

Background: There is a vast body of empirical work on adolescent anger, but no efforts have been made to summarize findings across nonintervention studies.

Objectives: The aims of this study were to identify predictors for anger in adolescents through a comprehensive review of the literature, to use quantitative meta-analysis to determine the magnitude of the relationship between each predictor and anger, and to examine the influence of selected moderators on the relationship between each predictor and anger.

Method: The literature review included 288 published studies and 87 unpublished doctoral dissertation completed between 1980 and 2007, of which 88 met the inclusion criteria.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between perceived stress and wellness in early adolescents and to test primary appraisal as a mediator of this relationship using the Neuman Systems Model as the primary framework. The sample consisted of 144 adolescents, ages 12-14, who responded to instruments measuring perceived stress, primary appraisal, and wellness in classroom settings. Design: The literature reviewed included 183 studies of MFA, published and unpublished, between 1981 and 2006.

Methods: Seventy-two studies met the inclusion criteria and yielded 14 predictors of MFA.

The purposes of this methodological study were to factor analyze the short form of the Tilden Interpersonal Relationship Inventory (IPRI) for early adolescents, and to assess construct validity of the social support and conflict subscales with early adolescents. The sample consisted of 147 early adolescents, aged 12-14, who completed instrument packets in classrooms in a suburban middle school. Data obtained on the IPRI were subjected to principal components factor analysis with Varimax rotation.
