Article Synopsis
  • Bowel perforation, particularly from blunt trauma such as motor vehicle accidents, is a serious condition that requires urgent detection and treatment; the study examines these aspects in traumatic small bowel perforation (SBP).
  • Conducted at King Abdulaziz Medical City, the retrospective cohort study analyzed 838 abdominal trauma cases from 2017 to 2023, identifying 40 patients with SBP, predominantly male and mainly due to motor vehicle accidents.
  • Results indicated abdominal tenderness and distension as common clinical signs, revealing a 4.77% incidence of SBP, while morbidity factors were linked to gender, age, and initial hematocrit levels, with complications including cardiac arrest and DIC observed in some patients.
