Article Synopsis
  • The study compares aerobic granulation and pollutant removal using conventional activated sludge (CAS) and preformed aerobic granular sludge (AGS) to treat real textile wastewater (TWW).
  • Granulation was achieved faster in the reactor with preformed AGS, taking only 28 days compared to 65 days for CAS, although both methods showed similar pollutant removal efficiencies.
  • The presence of real TWW negatively impacted heterotrophic bacteria but not ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, indicating that AGS with larger particle sizes could better withstand the effects of actual wastewater.

The effect of fermentation pH (uncontrolled, 4 and 10) on the releases of carbon source and phosphorus from nitrifying aerobic granular sludge (N-AGS) was investigated. Meanwhile, metal ion concentration and microbial community characterization were explored during N-AGS fermentation. The results indicated that N-AGS fermentation at pH 10 significantly promoted the releases of soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) and total volatile fatty acids (TVFAs).
