Hypertension, a globally prevalent condition, is closely associated with T cell-mediated inflammatory responses. Studies have shown that T cells, by secreting pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), Interleukin-17 (IL-17), and Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), directly lead to vascular dysfunction and elevated blood pressure. The activation of Th1 and Th17 cell subsets, along with the dysfunction of regulatory T cells (Tregs), is a critical mechanism in the onset and progression of hypertension.

Osteonecrosis of femoral head (ONFH) is characterized not only by ischemic bone tissue necrosis but also by cartilage degeneration, which plays an essential role in the pathogenesis of ONFH. The molecular communication between tissues contributes to disease progression, however the communication between cartilage and subchondral bone in the progression of ONFH remains unclear. In this study, we integrated transcriptomic data from ONFH cartilage and subchondral bone, exploring common differentially expressed genes (DEGs), pathway and function enrichment analyses, the protein-protein interaction (PPI) network, and hub genes to comprehensively study molecular integration.

Objective: This study aimed to screen an immune-related gene (IRG) panel and develop a novel approach for diagnosing pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) utilizing bioinformatics and machine learning (ML).

Methods: Gene expression profiles were retrieved from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database to identify differentially expressed immune-related genes (IRG-DEGs). We employed five machine learning algorithms-LASSO, random forest (RF), boosted regression trees (BRT), XGBoost, and support vector machine recursive feature elimination (SVM-RFE) to identify biomarkers derived from IRG-DEGs associated with the diagnosis of PAH, incorporating them into the IRG-DEGs panel.

  • Maternal sepsis and infections (MSMIs) significantly impact women's health globally, but comprehensive data on their trends from 1990 to 2019 is limited, prompting this study to investigate patterns and predictors of MSMIs among women of childbearing age (WCBA).
  • The research utilized data from the Global Burden of Diseases 2019 to estimate incidence and mortality rates across various age groups, employing statistical methods to analyze trends and make predictions through 2044.
  • Findings showed a marked decline in both the incidence and mortality rates of MSMIs from 1990 to 2019, particularly in the African Region, with variations across different regions, indicating that factors like age and birth cohort significantly influence these trends.

  • Catecholamines (CAs) are important biomarkers for diagnosing and treating diseases, but accurately separating them from biological samples is challenging due to their low levels and existing methods' limited selectivity.
  • Researchers developed a dual-recognition imprinted membrane (BA-MIM) that combines boron affinity and molecular imprinting for highly selective capture and release of CAs, showing excellent adsorption capacity and reusability.
  • An innovative analytical method using BA-MIM and ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) was created, enabling sensitive detection of CAs in rat brain tissue and linking CA metabolism to kidney disease in a specific rat model.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is the most malignant subtype of breast cancer, characterized by aggressive malignancy and a poor prognosis. Emerging nanomedicine-based combination therapy represents one of the most promising strategies for combating TNBC. Polypyrrole nanoparticles (PPY) are excellent drug delivery vehicles with outstanding photothermal performances.

Objective: To investigate the impact of the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist Exendin-4 on the proportion of myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) in male ApoE mice, and investigate alterations in the concentrations of inflammatory factors in plasma and spleen tissues and assess their correlation with MDSCs.

Methods: Thirty male ApoE mice were randomly divided into five groups (n = 6 per group): control group (CON), model group (MOD), Exendin-4 intervention group (MOD/Ex-4), Exendin-9-39 intervention group (MOD/Ex-9-39), and Exendin-4 + Exendin-9-39 combined intervention group (MOD/Ex-4 + Ex-9-39). After 4 weeks of drug intervention, changes in aortic plaque were observed using Oil Red O staining and H&E staining.

A novel magnetic dispersive solid phase extraction (MDSPE) procedure based on the deep eutectic solvent (DES) modified magnetic graphene oxide/metal organic frameworks nanocomposites (MGO@ZIF-8@DES) was established and used for the efficient enrichment of estradiol, estrone, and diethylstilbestrol in cosmetics (toner, lotion, and cream) for the first time. Then, the three estrogens were separated and determined by UHPLC-UV analysis method. In order to study the features and morphology of the synthesized adsorbents, various techniques such as FT-IR, SEM, and VSM measurements were executed.

Self-assembled DNA nanostructures hold great promise in biosensing, drug delivery and nanomedicine. Nevertheless, challenges like instability and inefficiency in cellular uptake of DNA nanostructures under physiological conditions limit their practical use. To tackle these obstacles, this study proposes a novel approach that integrates the cationic polymer polyethyleneimine (PEI) with DNA self-assembly.

Herein, we report the finding that a naturally sunflower pollen-derived microspheres (HSECs) with hierarchical structures can selectively absorb polyC and polyA with high efficiency and affinity. HSECs exhibit the capability to selectively absorb polyC and polyA ssDNA under neutral and acidic conditions. It has been observed that the presence of metal cations, specifically Ca, enhances the absorption efficiency of HSECs.

Modern studies have shown that neuroendocrine disorders caused by the dysfunction of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis are one of the important pathogenetic mechanisms of kidney-yang-deficiency-syndrome (KYDS). The preventive effect of Gushudan on KYDS has been reported, but its regulatory mechanisms on the HPG axis have not been elucidated. In this study, we developed an integrated untargeted and targeted metabolomics analysis strategy to investigate the regulatory mechanism of Gushudan on the HPG axis in rats with KYDS.

Bacterial infection is one of the most serious clinical complications, with life-threatening outcomes. Nature-inspired biomaterials offer appealing microscale and nanoscale architectures that are often hard to fabricate by traditional technologies. Inspired by the light-harvesting nature, we engineered sulfuric acid-treated sunflower sporopollenin exine-derived microcapsules (HSECs) to capture light and bacteria for antimicrobial photothermal therapy.

Background: It is unclear what the causal relationship is between the gut microbiota and sepsis. Therefore, we employed Mendelian randomization (MR) to determine whether a causal link exists between the two.

Methods: This study used publicly available genome-wide association studies (GWAS) summary data of gut microbiota, sepsis, sepsis (critical care), and sepsis (28-day death in critical care) to perform a two-sample MR analysis.

Macrophage dysfunction is a significant contributor to more than 70 % of sepsis-related deaths, specifically secondary bacterial infections, during the immunosuppression stage of sepsis. Nevertheless, the role of Rab26 in this context remains unclear. In this study, we observed a substantial decrease in Rab26 expression in macrophages during the immunosuppressive phase of sepsis, which was also found to be suppressed by high extracellular levels of HMGB1.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates whether there is a causal link between certain blood metabolites and the risk of sepsis, using advanced statistical methods like Mendelian randomization.
  • Researchers analyzed data from genome-wide association studies involving thousands of individuals to see if higher levels of specific metabolites were linked to lower sepsis risk.
  • Four metabolites were identified (1-oleoylglycerophosphoethanolamine, alpha-glutamyltyrosine, heptanoate, and saccharin) that appear to have a protective effect against sepsis, offering new insights into sepsis prevention strategies.
